Was your vinegar the type that has the "mother" in it? I'm using an apple cider vinegar with the mother in it. But it is no where as effective as the yellow insect strips.

I learned this from PollyK. The "mother" is a bacterium for fermentation. I found it in the health food section of Fred Meyer and it is rather expense compared to plain vinegar. Still, I get a lot more gnats stuck on the sticky strip than in the vinegar. But I really want something to get any larva in lthe soil.

It's bad enough when it takes 3 years from seed to bloom for lilies then those buggers go and eat the root systems of the seedlings. Angry Sad .

Lynn remember when someone told us about something with camphor she uses? I wish I could find that link again. Shrug!

And Connie, thanks for clearing up 'the mother' thing. I was sitting hear reading your post and wondering how in the world would I find their mother. Rolling on the floor laughing

Cotton balls soaked in camphor.

Thank you Connie, I now remember hearing that years ago about vinegar. : )

Well I had to look it up myself. Just google "mother of vinegar" and get all the hot details.

I have a couple of small "Bella Pink" and have successfully saved fertile seeds from them. Matter of fact, I need to snatch the seed pods off the one outside before they fall off. Big Grin

I have tried every one of the suggestions above (except the camphor) and I STILL am beset by fungus gnats and aphids! Maybe they just live on my back porch, waiting for something tasty to come in! Grrr. Drives me nuts, too, because it's such a nice big room with big south and east facing windows!

I used a combination of the peroxide drench and the rose systemic on my plants that I overwintered indoors. Oh, and I used the indoor Raid twice. After the second application the winter months went without a hitch. Thumbs up

I repotted, washed the plants, used systemics, sprayed, used the yellow sticky traps, peroxide, even tried the cut potato trick. And I still had aphids and white flies. Oh and alcohol wipes and spray and soap solution. And foolishly tried to overwinter some in my GH. Aaaaakkkk! That's one of the reasons my garden isn't doing as well this year; the GH got infested, too. We even used a fogger in the GH. Killed off the wasps that were "bugging" me, and the flies, but didn't touch the aphids or white flies. Not going there again! I'll keep a couple of houseplants, but not even going to try overwintering again! Well, except for a couple of gerberas maybe. And that darn gaura that keeps living in spite of me. Hilarious! And my little red geraniums (yes, I know they're really pelargoniums, but I've been calling them geraniums since I was a kid. Smiling )--the aphids don't seem to like them! Hee hee, maybe my problem is I'm too greedy?

Yes, and I just don't understand it. I have a handful of plants that live on my back porch year round, but they never show any sign of pests. But just as soon as I bring in a plant from outdoors....BAM! The whole room is overrun with bugs! I don't have a problem with bugs in the GH unless I try to bring in something from outdoors. And what's really stupid is that I NEVER see any sign of infestation when the plants are outside. I think the plant gods are trying to tell me: "You live in Northeastern Washington. It gets COLD in the winter. You are NOT allowed to have green things in the winter here!" Hilarious!

I had three tender succulent plant that were really susceptible to mealy bug infestation indoors, nothing outdoors how ever. I also treated them with the systemic and alcohol swabs with very poor results. I won't even try those plants indoors again. Not worth the trouble. : (

Years ago I found out that the same species of Bacillus Thuringiensis that kills mosquito larva also kills fungus gnat larva. So, I put a mosquito dunk in my watering can and watered all my indoor plants with the water after letting it soak a while. It quickly got rid of my fungus gnat problem and I didn't have to worry about the cats drinking the water. BT isn't harmful to anything other than mosquito and fungus gnat larva.
