Betty, I hope your daylilies do great and all thrive for you. Best bet would be to mulch them all heavily this fall so that they really get protected for their first winter. The first year I bought daylilies from Maryotts that was Bill's advice. Mulch heavily for winter. It worked out well.

Only I can't give you any overwintering tips based on any experience. Hilarious! But thank you so much for that offer. Thumbs up
Based on what I have read, a mulch layer to protect them through the winter should help. This was a nice culture article I came across but she lives in Canada on the west coast so not as cold:

Lots of good info here too, great FAQ:

Ok here's the picture of Champagne Time. I do believe it's suppose to be pink, however, this one is orange. Bill told me via e-mail that yes the color can be affect by geographic location. It is a pretty daylilly though. What do you all think? Confused Confused Confused

I think it's probably CHAMPAGNE TIME. Seems to me that most of the pinks are on the warm side, and that's why I really jump on one that I see in person or from a picture someone took in his/her garden that really looks pink. The website pictures always look pink, but the actual flower is often a different color than the picture showed. And the same with irises -- there aren't that many pinks that are really that pink, yet the hybridizers' pictures are usually really pink -- sometimes even hot pink! And the weather can affect it, too, in addition to geographic location -- plus the fact that what you are seeing is a rebloom. And is that the first flower? I've discovered that you should never make a decision based on the first flower. I'm pretty new to daylilies myself and am still learning so much all the time. If you like it (and I think it's beautiful -- love the ruffles!) I think you should keep it for a year and see what you think a year from now. And compared to most of my first flowers, that one's a beaut!

My first introduction to the color variations was when I purchased TALLADEGA. The introduction picture showed a fire engine red, but when it bloomed it looked a dull rose burgundy to me. So then I started paying more attention to the actual description of the flower and less attention to the picture color. And I think the worst examples are the blues, purples and pinks. You'll see some brilliant colors that are just not there in the blooms. It is definitely a learning experience.

But I really trust Bill Maryott, and he sells top quality plants in great condition -- and I don't know how he does it, but a whole bunch of his plants will bloom soon after you receive them, and I've never seen that from anyone else. Did you send him the picture to check? I'm sure he'll want you to be happy, no matter what.

Yes Betja, I did send him a copy of the picture. I told him that the flower itself is just beautiful, it's just not pink as in the picture. However, I do not plan on getting rid of it, quit the contrary. Yes, this is the very first time it bloomed. Actually, of all the plants that he sent me, this is the only one that has bloomed so far. I know that Annabelles Blush will be blooming soon, I can't wait to see what that one looks like. I guess all the others I'll have to wait until next year! Sad Sad However, it will give my something to look forward to.

I also was unaware that the blues, pinks and some purples don't come out like in the pictures. I suspect I will see more examples of that as each plant blooms. I am kinda disappointed to hear that. There is a daylily I really like called Larry's Obsession. I guess I'll hold off on that one until I have an opportunity to see it person........hopefully...someday! Thanks for the heads up on the color differences, I'll keep that in mind before ordering. Good to know.

I am going to make you even more jealous, here is Purple Maze, it too bloomed for me this year - I just LOVE it. Hot Lava and Halloween Costume did not bloom, but that's OK.

Currently my Maryotts are in (former) plastic kitty litter bins (my maine coons go through a lot of litter!) and will overwinter in my garage this year. I had plans to pull all the overgrown evergreen bushes from along the front side of my house, which faces south, and plant them all there. But when I lost some trees this spring, my money had to be spent removing them, instead. So hopefully next year these Maryotts will find a permanent home. Right now, they are happily living in the buckets.

The color on this photo is true to what I saw. That doesn't always happen sometimes. It does change from pink to peachy, depending on the weather conditions. ~Jan

Jan, good idea on the litter tubs. Nice size for holding daylilies. I'm using some rinsed cleaning solution bins (non-tox, biodegradeable Smiling from which I cut the tops and drilled holes in the bottoms. About the same size as what you are using. Working great so far even in this Texas summer. Smiling

My PURPLE MAZE is much less pink, in fact it is no where near pink but very peachy. Hard to describle the color. It really is doing well here. Gorgeous blooms this year and lots and lots of them. The eyezone pattern is so striking.
