Team Gloves or Team Bare Hands?

By Trish
July 24, 2011

We've talked feet, let's talk hands. Do you protect and pamper, or tough it out barehanded?

I never wore gloves until the last few years. Not even during haying season or cattle drives. They seemed to make me feel clumsy.
Now if I am doing weeding where there are berry vines or thistles I wear the gloves. : )

Gloves when I'm weeding, but not when I'm planting or sowing.
I like to feel the soil on my hands. I can 'feel' when it's good, when it's healthy.
It's much like being connected or being grounded to the earth.

Nearly always gloves. Carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands limits sensation. Can't feel the fineness of the soil, anyway, and I've been hurt without realizing. Besides, putting on gloves is easier for me than holding a nail brush to scrub up. Hilarious!

Used to be no gloves, but after visiting the TX Disposal System with MGs a few yrs ago, I wear gloves all the time when I'm digging in the dirt. At TGS they explained that everything goes into the various soil mixtures they carry. Everything includes road kill, among other unsavory by-products I'd never thought about. I had bought that soil for all my garden beds, from them and from another well known organic nursery.
I hope to have a vegetable garden next spring, but I'll use my own compost to fill the raised bed. No road kill for my veggies.

I forget to put gloves on a lot of the time. But try to put them on because over the years the abuse I have given them make my hands look so much older than my piers. I have tried lately to polish my nails at least once a week and treat myself to a pedicure monthly. I find the nail polish helps them; not as many broken and split ends. And it makes me wear my gloves more! LOL!

I only take off my gloves when I'm watering the garden. Otherwise, I always wear thermal gloves year-round. Better protection from thorns without compromising my sense of touch. I wear gauntlet gloves if I'm pruning or deadheading inside the flower beds. I never use leather gloves anymore. I've ruined too many pairs by getting them wet.

Gloves for brambles and stinging nettle, no gloves for anything else. I can't seem to find any that fit me well enough to be of much use.

Gloves only if I'm using tools like shovels and rakes. Gloves make my hands feel claustrophobic.

I love touching dirt, plants and and water. But I do lotion up when I'm finished gardening.

No gloves for me in the garden. Only wear them when cleaning out the chicken house and helping load cedar logs.

I guess I have to say I'm a combination of both ... some jobs are "Team Gloves" while others are "Bare Hands". I have to wear gloves when shoveling or raking because of the blister thing and when using the old wheel barrow because of splinters! When planting I sometimes start out wearing gloves to try to keep my hands clean, but within minutes the gloves are off and I'm bare handed ... there's a permanent spot by the kitchen sink that holds a scrub brush and a bar of "Gardeners Hand Soap" for my nails!

On occasion I go for a manicure and pedicure ... and the next day I wonder why I wasted my money because I'm right back outside bare handed and barefoot! Big Grin

Team no gloves here...at least while gardening and working around the house.

In winter when it's -45F I wear them, does that count?

I'm the same as Trish - gloves only if a shovel or rake or whatever is in my hand and they are heavy duty leather. "Sometimes" I will wear the yellow rubber gloves when I'm weeding but not always. They allow to me feel without being bulky with heavy gloves.

As a artist I paint murals but did a lot of faux finishing (before recession). I buy thin laytex gloves that I can use in the garden if the plant makes me itch...works well!

I wear out a $20 pair of leather gloves a year removing japanese honeysuckle (25 acres of it). I use Fox Gloves for pulling weeds and planting, because they are the only gloves that are form-fitting for me. I hate baggy fingers!

If the fingertips are reinforced, probably just as cost effective as the cheaper ones I've been buying that have to be replaced so often because I'm too lazy to sew the tips back together when I've worn a hole in them. Thumbs up
