Lucky down here, I have a rest from gardening in the summer when it's just too hot and humid to do much except to follow the shade around the garden and keep the pathways clear. Now the tropical jungle is slowing down, and the gardeners are up to speed again.

I'm getting ready to plant all my Earth Boxes for the growing season. Two tomato plants went in around the beginning of October, and they are huge, and have fruit already. I did have a few pepper plants that survived the summer heat, and are still producing, but they're looking pretty sad.

I got everything covered today since we are expecting our first frost tonight. And tomorrow again. I even wrapped the sugar peas. All my pots brought into the greenhouse and I remembered to take coleus cuttings! Yay.

David picked a bit of lettuce and spinach. We pulled the peppers out yesterday after picking another big box.

My onion sets came in today so I'll be able to plant the garlic and onions this weekend. Then we should be about finished at the farm.

I ordered and received a solar cover for my greenhouse so we'll put that on soon.

Lots of brassicas just coming in tho, so I won't starve.

We had our first frost last night but my stuff is covered so it's fine. I finally got my garlic planted. I am still preparing the row for the onions. I am hoping to be able to plant them tomorrow. Now I want to plant peas!

I'm finally done with picking up and cleaning up the veg garden... and it looks like we still have some days coming that will let me get the perennial garden at least more or less cleaned up for the winter. In fact, it looks as though we could very well make it to Thanksgiving this year without having snow on the ground Hurray!

Minus 5 last night. It amazes me to read about people harvesting and planting stuff this time of year. My big experiment is the lettuce and broc seeds I planted barely in time to see if it will germinate in the spring early. And how my garlic planted with more care this year will do. There is about a four inch snow cover thank heavens before the real cold hit. I may fire up one of my aero gardens for some fresh lettuce over winter.

Due to the threat of frost, which didn't happen last night, I covered my three containers of lettuce. I'll leave them covered with plastic since tonight won't be any big improvement. They can come into the kitchen when I'm tired of covering and uncovering them.

Yes, it was cold yesterday. The wind, I think, made it feel worse.

Nothing growing in my veggie gardens. If I had grown any root crops those would still be there but I didn't grow any this year. I like to leave the Turnips and Rutabagas till winter.

We still have Butternut Squash but it went to the asparagus side so I can't get in there to harvest it until we get the aspargus field cut down. That generally is the very end of November. I know there are still tomatoes out there so I'll attempt to find them as I dig the many dahlias. I should keep this job in mind when I want to order new dahlias!

I had Butternut Squash at dinner last night as I was out at a friends house. It was delicious.

I can't grow any of the winter squashes myself as I just don't have room for those long vines. Plus it takes so long to make the fruits. I am too used to the fact that with the summer squashes you just keep on picking fruits.

You can get the bush type winter squash that take up about the same amount of space as the zucchini vines do. The good part about them, is that they keep for along time into the winter.

I didn't realize there were any bush type winter squashes. I did try a spaghetti squash once that was supposed to be bush type. HA! NOT, not, not. That plant was humongous.

So I think I will just stick to my summer squashes. However,. I do plan on growing the pattypan summer ones for the first time ever for me.

I've grown the acorn bush types that stayed the size of a zucchini plant. I also grew some pumpkins that were bush type, but they got pretty long, maybe 8 feet long, which is shorter then regular vine types.

I had a bush-type butternut a couple of years ago, I think it was called "Butterbush." It started to ramble a little bit quite late in the season, but I think those vines could have been trimmed back without any problem.

Planning to host a tomato seed-swap?

Now THAT is the way to collect variety! I could see you trying to collect "every" tomato variety ever grown.
