sklakin - Welcome! to the Daylily Forum here on ATP! So very sorry to hear of all the problems you've had trying to keep and grow your daylilies and other plants. And very sorry to hear of yours and your husband's paralysis. I hope the surgery you both had was successful. I am glad that the drought in Texas is over for at least this year. But too much rain too fast can become a problem as well. I hope your garden is once again beautiful now and in the future!

Border Lord- has never rebloomed for me, but holds its color all day in very hot weather with many hours of sun (I divided the clump mid-July last year and it was still gorgeous this year-- the other half I moved to a little shadier spot and was rewarded with blooms that were saturated with even larger purple eye zones)
Evening Enchantment-great rebloom; holds color all day; the contrast of dark purple and very green throat make it difficult to get an accurate picture of its true color
Erin Lea- holds color well and gets a nice toothy edge when the weather gets hot (it has rebloomed, but not consistently)
Isolde-blooms early here and throws many poly blooms; holds its color very well on hot days; hard to set pods on
Red Volunteer
Ruby Spider
Shady Lady- sometimes reblooms in my garden
Siloam Peony Display-beautiful double blooms that last all day without drooping

These are just a few of my favorites. I purchased many new cultivars this year, so I'm sure my list will continue to change Smiling

I also love to share with friends and neighbors; I dug a few today that are going to a newly addicted daylily fan (pun intended). I plan to start a new garden at school this year so that my students can learn a little about genetics with real organisms.

'Erin Lea', looks like it could be a candidate to add on my list, it seems like a good garden plant with a rust rating of 1.7. Photos like this mean a lot to me when I am looking for a new plant.

The list below are some of my oldest daylilies. They have survived utter neglect and still bloom & thrive. Of course they do much better with regular fertilizing & watering.

Annie Welch

Becky Lynn

Butterscotch Ruffles (my earliest bloomer & bloomed for 6 weeks this year)

Double Sunset Glow (hasn't bloomed yet but tons of scapes)

Fairy Tale Pink (living in a windowbox & still multiplying with more scapes every year)

Gypsy Jingle

Holly Hill Blazer (always puts on an amazing display)

Holly Hill Reward (a late that usually is the last bloomer in my garden)

Jo Barbre (another late yet to bloom this year)

Oriental Silk (I love the flowers & the scapes have lots of buds. I have it in a confined area so it hasn't really multiplied for me much).

Pearl Hammond

Tani

Zada Mae (really pretty double whose blooms are always picture perfect. Hasn't multiplied much because Holly Hill Blazer keeps overrunning it).

I don't typically get rebloom so can't comment on that. I just know these guys are tough and given proper conditions should multiply pretty quickly. Most of mine are on a slope (water-stressed) and shaded but they still put on a wonderful show this year! Hurray!

@Scflowers,
What grade do you teach?

I teach 7-8th grade science and have used daylilies to teach for years.
Here is the unit on daylilies that I created.

Lisa,
I teach 7th & 8th grade science also! Thanks for sharing Smiling

This year I will have 7th grade as a gifted and talented class, and usually will teach the same students again next year when they move up to eighth grade.

Genetics is one of our units for seventh grade, so I want to engage them in something that they could learn to do as a hobby or even a profession if they really get involved in it.

I love ATP! Everyone's always willing to help!

I have this one in several of my daylily beds. It always has loads of blooms and they can be quite stunning. It's a beautiful yellow, not faded or creped.

I don't think about rebloom. In my climate, IA zone 4B I really appreciate the LATE bloomers. Several hybridizers are working on late bloomers, but I suppose they would be considered among the newer daylilies. I don't off hand know of any oldies that are lates.

Caitlinsgarden if you are looking for late daylilies try Olallie daylilies. They are in Vermont (not sure if the weather is similar) and have many late daylilies although most aren't registered. I have a few and they are just starting to put up scapes now. My late daylilies are just starting to bloom so these will be very lates for me. They believe they say they have daylilies that bloom into late September for them. NYRita turned me on to them. She says they really extend her bloom season.

Seedfork said:sooby,
I did not check where the plant was hybridized, because no matter where it was hybridized (north or south) I would still need confirmation from someone who actually grows it to know if it is one of those plants that would rebloom down here...and not just rebloom, but have a appreciable rebloom.
I am thinking about adding 'Techny Peach Lace' (rebloom or not) just based on the image posted by Silldew over in the July Blooms thread.
That thing is over loaded with buds!
Does 'Techny Peach Lace' rebloom for anyone out there?

Which is precisely why I tend to limit my purchases of daylily cultivars to those I have actually seen growing well in Florida gardens.

Leslie, I keep forgetting to add Fin and Feather. With my two sportsman, I should. They are planning a fishing trip early in the morning at KY Lake.

L. Blue Baby I have planned on getting that one too. Funny how things just get pushed aside.

My absolute favorite "oldie" is 'Agnes Shumate', hybridizer - Greisbach '74. Anyone who thinks a daylily has to have eyes or patterns or ruffles, etc. in order to be drop dead gorgeous should see Agnes! It is a large flower, deep gold, and the plant is much taller than its registered with flowers on strong stems held above the foliage. Beautiful foliage is one of its best qualities. Before it blooms and after it blooms it is a wonderful green shrub amidst some daylily plants that may not be at their best, foliage-wise. I have never taken a photo of the plant (I have 2 large clumps) after it's done blooming... this year I will!

Agnes was given to me by Mildred Krueger, a long-time friend of my mother-in-law, who was the historian of the AHS many years ago, and she acquired the very best of the daylilies being grown back in the 70's and 80's. When she learned that I was sincere in my daylily interest, she gave me at least 50 "oldies", every one of which I treasure! Of newer oldies, a few of my favorites are: 'Janice Brown', 'Strawberry Candy' and 'Wineberry Candy', 'Siloam Merle Kent', 'Barbara Mitchell' and 'Lilting Lavender'.
