That is a shame but my bet is that they recover quickly and start to put out this tomatoes again.

Crossing Fingers! hope so, I removed some more damaged and wilted branches today that I didn't see yesterday. For the most part the plants still look healthy and I seen some new flowers opening today so it just might be a minor setback.

ediblelandscapingsc said:Well after getting over 7 feet tall the high winds today knocked over my cages for my SS100 plants. Several branches are broke now including many with flowers and about 40 or so green tomatoes got knocked off in the ordeal. Thumbs down thank god it didn't snap the base of the plants. I stood them back up and added extra support, now I just have to see if it recovers quickly or if the stress puts a halt on production. Sighing!

Maybe for future years, if the winds are usually from the same direction, you could plant some rows of "wind breaks" upwind of the tomato patch. Anything as tall as the tomatoes or taller, spaced to give some resistance, but also let some wind filter through (slower). Like, anything on a trellis but with gaps to prevent THAT trellis from being blown down.

Against wind, a "defense in depth" is easier to accomplish than one big wall that begs to be blown down when you need it most.

Thanks for the suggestion Rick, but I no longer grow rows of tomatoes last year was a few this year only 2 and maybe the same next year. I'm so busy propagating and planting long lived food crops I don't really have the time or energy to tend an annual garden.

Dan, could you expand a bit on your "long-lived" food crops? Aside from some kale, which reseeds itself every year, all my veggies need replanting. (I don't grow asparagus and the birds get my berries before I do!)

fruit and nut bearing trees and shrubs, and perennial veggies like asparagus and artichokes. In your area you can grow sunchokes, service berry, american persimmons, honeyberries, raspberries, apples, plums, cherries, peaches, nanking cherries, horseradish, mints, daylilies, pecans, hazelnuts, heartnuts, butternuts, walnuts, hickory nuts, chestnuts, pawpaws, pears, mayhaw, medlars, and many many more things you can eat. I grow most of what I listed above plus more tender plants like figs, pomegranates, and Asian persimmons to name a few.

Thank you both, Thomas I read your post about the tomato juice you made and thought about making me a glass of supersweet 100 juice. Wonder how they would be?

Daniel I would think those tomatoes would make a really great tasting Juice or Sauce. Besides the health benefit, I just like a cold glass of Tomato Juice....even when it has be supercharged with a smooth elixir *Blush*

I've been lurking, too exhausted trying to keep up with my Tomato Jungle plus caring for another tomato-in-a-container over at a neighbor''s....and trying to beat the heat and mosquitoes! I'm growing two varieties in two types of containers, for comparison: a 5-gal shop bucket and an Earthbucket, with it's more room!

Here's some pics:

Thanks, Thomas!!! Green Grin!

What can I say?? I'm a hoverer! Rolling on the floor laughing It's a lot of work for me, and with my recent fall & hospitalization, I think my 2017 Tomato Jungle will shrink even more! Blinking In May 2015, the Jungle started out as 11 plants. . . but by June, I had to give away my 2 least favorites because the converging shadows on my patio did not allow 8 hours of sun for more than 9 plants. In May 2016, the Jungle is now only 8 plants plus the one plant I have over at a neighbor's. . . . I'm thinking that in May 2017, I'll reduce the Jungle to 7 plants and NONE over at my neighbor's (I'll give her one but she has to tend it herself!! My knees can't take the daily 2-3 round trips. Thumbs down ).
