It was 27 below, but no lily test here. Everything is covered by a thick blanket of snow. A few weeks ago, the frost actually came out of the ground in some places.

I have two people in Alaska trialling Japanese irises for me. One is coastal, and I think he will be fine. the other is up near Fairbanks, and I don't think they will make it there, but we try.
Polly, I'm zone1. I'm 14 miles south of Fbks. Depending on where in Fbks, they MAY make it. I'll check with you in the spring to see. I'm curious. It can be as much as 20-25° warmer in the hills. Don't know his name but we have a grower who breeds all kinds of lilies and he's up in the hills of Fbks...I'm in a valley in one of the colder pockets. Are they actually in Fbks or somewhere near?...The ones on the coast (if it's down near Anchorage way) should be fine. They are way warmer. We consider them another state...LOL
Batchelor Buttons are my favorite, Moby. I just love their scent. It's gotta be something in my childhood they remind me of. I know dad grew them for cut flower sales.
I love it too. Just planted the bulbs last spring. It will be awhile to have a magnificent stand like that.
