Larry - I agree .... I am doing it by trial and error. Was sorry to see Red Volunteer showing rust in your above photo. It is listed as showing a 1.1 rust resistance rating. Ha! so much for those ratings ....

I think that different strains of rust can come in and hit even plants that were originally listed as rust resistant. The other thing is the actual number rating. A "shows rust resistance" notation may mean that it does get some rust, but certainly not a 5.0 rating for rust susceptibility. The rating system is hard for me to comprehend, truth be told. Glare

Larry, thanks for the pictures....I'm visual. I got a bit of rust for the first time on a few of the new cultivars that I added. It was disheartening to see the spots on my foliage. I pot planted them for a few weeks and there was no sign of rust anywhere. They looked healthy and happy. I ground planted them and in a couple of weeks the rust showed up....only on three plants that I got from the same garden. A fellow ATP poster gave me a heads up as she had gotten rust on plants from the same garden. For now I'm reading information trying to decide what to do about it.

Hopefully that means there are no spores in my plants Whistling

You would have to have daylily rust spores floating around in the air in your garden for your plants to get rust. That's not likely where you live unless you have other daylily growers with rust nearby or you already have it. Did you have rust last year?

Is it clear what combo of temps / rainfall (or moment of watering?) / humidity trigger rust?
Perhaps my summers are just not hot enough to get rust? Sticking tongue out

Very hot weather discourages rust but if you don't have the spores in your garden then there's no way the plants could get rust anyway. I don't know what the current status of daylily rust is in the Netherlands, do you know of anyone with daylily rust there this year?

For an outline of the environmental conditions required for daylily rust, see the second question and answer on my rust site's FAQ page here: http://web.ncf.ca/ah748/FAQ.ht...

If you want to get into it even more deeply, there is a link at the bottom of the FAQ page to the full research paper from which this information was taken.

I started tracking rust this year and have made notes on each plant in my PlantStep program. I'll compare them next year and see which ones are consistent.

haha no, but last year I only had 2 (TWO!) daylilies Rolling on the floor laughing

This year I added/ am adding 'a couple more' (90 cultivars Rolling on the floor laughing ) from 7 different nurseries, from all over Europe.
So, I guess if just one of those is contaminated with rust I'm done for? Sad

I have no idea about the status of daylily rust in the Netherlands and, apart from the nurseries and Sabrina in Italy (hi @Cybersix ! Smiling ), I don't know anyone with a real interest in DL's.
I will try to find out Thumbs up

Thank you for the FAQ page and link! Thank You!

The only thing I've come up with so far is the map below, and I'm not really sure exactly how to interpret it (click on Distribution if it doesn't automatically take you to the map):

I don't know about rust on DLs and I strongly believe I can't distinguish it from spider mites, for example. The look of the leaves is similar at early stage. The past year I thought I had rust. The man who sold me DLs told me it was spider mites (we call them red or yellow spiders). This year I found the same and many of the members on here identificated it as spider mites. If the rust of DLs is the same of all other plants then yes, rust is in Italy. The problem is my total ignorance in gardening!

Mayo - If some of your plants get rust, it is not the end of your daylilies. If some happen to be really rusty plants, you may decided to get rid of them, but some rust (to me personally) is not a big deal. We've been living with it here in the south in the USA for over a decade and folks are still buying and growing daylilies in most all regions. And if it becomes a real problem, then you can do what I am doing and breed for rust resistance and become more selective of what cultivars you acquire.

rust comes off on your fingers or a paper towel or whatever you rub it with. If nothing comes off, its not rust. Just make sure not to touch anything else if you use your fingers, until you rinse them. Rust also almost stands up on the plant, mites make like an indentation in the leaves.

The rust fungus species on daylilies is specific to daylilies (and patrinia) so in that respect no, it is not the same as on all other plants. If you mean it looks the same as rust on other plants then yes, it can do, but not the same as all rusts since not all rusts look alike. I don't recall seeing any official record of daylily rust in Italy, do you know people who have it?

If you ever think you have rust do post a picture on here and we can tell you. As Pam said, it is easy to differentiate from spider mite damage because spider mite damage doesn't have raised bumps of yellow-orange powder. There is a picture of spider mite damage versus daylily rust on my daylily rust site FAQ page: http://web.ncf.ca/ah748/FAQ.ht...

Thanks Sue for explanation. I'm not very good at observing (for now). I'm linking my old post where there are a couple of picture of affected leaves.

http://garden.org/thread/view_...

It seems more like spider mites if with this term we are referring to the same pest, that we call yellow spider, and it's a mite (Eotetranycus carpini) .
If I get it right spider mites love a hot and dry environment (this was the perfect case this summer) but I saw the same the past year and it was a cold and rainy summer; rust loves humidity, correct?

The link you posted shows there's should be no rust in Italy, but it's there in the closest country, so I would imagine it could travel.
