Cinda - that top photo of yours looks similar to needrain's photo. What cultivar is that one? I do have a couple of plants in a dry spot - too close to the house. They're not happy there and plan on relocating them this weekend. Our good rains have been fewer this year so that might be contributing to their unhappiness. We've gotten lots of sprinkles but not hard enough to get through the tree canopy to the ground.

No problem. I need to do "right" by my two suffering plants before buying any more.

Shadegardener said:Cinda - I noticed the zone. That would be the dilemma - where to store the potted plant. All of my spaces are heated to some degree although I have a cold frame that won't drop below 20 degrees. Thermostatically controlled 60 watt light bulb will come on to protect potted greens.

Actually, I bring mine in when it starts to go dormant. It doesn't need to be kept particularly warm, it is supposed to be hardy to zone 4 (container would be less, of course) - so I think that a protected 20 degrees would probably be OK. I wouldn't hesitate to try it.

My Toad Lily are loaded with buds! I hope to have an extra good show of them next month. They always bloom around DH's birthday Nov. 15th. I never knew they grew along side Spider Wort@davidLMO? I have some volunteer Spider Wort in full sun. My Toad Lily are in shade.

My first Toad Lily, T hirta, was given to me by a neighbor in the early 80's. No info, no name other than "a toad plant because it has spots" "it likes morning sun and regular water." The leaves did have a few faint spots... Shrug!

Where I planted it, it got full sun until noon...and I watered it when the ground seemed dry. It was a fuzzy, small plant about 8 inches tall and over the next few years, it remained a smallish, fuzzy plant. The only plants I had then were a few daylilies from my DH's grandma. A few years later at a local nursery, I saw pots of these tall hairy leaved plants sitting under a large tree. The sign said Tricyrtis hirta Toad Lily Fall blooming Shade plant....

I still have a few descendants of that original plant, under the eastern edge of a live oak, only now, they are a bit taller and 100% happier.

@ShadyGreenThumb - Spiderwort can grow in sun to shade - does better out of the shade. :=) Mine gets morning sun and shade from noon on. The Toad Lily are near in full shade.

Thanks @DavidLMO, I am going to move a few of mine next to the Toad Lily, I think.
