David -thanks for the tip! Thumbs up

Danita - I think you're onto something. ..the faster they can clearance out their garden center, the faster they can cam or repurpose their gatden center staff. Garden centers/nurseries (and ice cream stands) tend to close down around this time of year.

Cindividual - that feels so wrong that they don't allow you to rescue the plants somehow. Glare you tried though, and that counts for something Smiling

Danita said:Ours has clearance racks almost year-round, too. It's the first place that I stop when I go to Lowe's...or if I'm near Lowe's, or passing by Lowe's, etc. Hilarious! I wonder if the big garden-center-wide sales may be a northern thing.

Ditto on the clearance at Lowes. Went for painting rags today and picked up 3 Japanese Ferns and 5 White Salvia - all $1 each nodding This summer picked up a white Bird of paradise - 30 $ plant for 7 $. Who in their right mind would buy a BOP here? Indeed. Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

Regarding offering of standard plants, where I live in NW Missouri everyone clears out plants, shrubs and trees by early November, starting back up in late early April. When the shut down, is a great time to "shop". 3 years ago at HD on Nov. 1, I got 20 1 gallon Hostas at 6 plants for $ 2. Last year at Earl May on November 5, I bought 10 plants & shrubs ranging in reg price from $8.95 to > $50. The former were 2 $ and the latter 5 $. I simply sank all the pots in my old tomato bed and planted after Mothers day. I got over 250 $ of plants for 45 $. nodding

BTW - I basically never pay retail price for anything - maybe 1 in 50 purchases. Lowes was still at 50 % off today.

David, when I tell my husband how much I saved without mentioning how much I spent, he call it "female math".

I needed that laugh after dealing with all this mess here on the east coast of SC. They even shut down hunting for a few weeks here. Oh well if we can make it thru Hugo 30 years ago (almost) we will make it thru this. You all sure do help keep a smile on my face!! Thank You! I tip my hat to you. Big Grin

Rolling on the floor laughing Actually, after I bought 3 trees for $4 each, I told my very understanding husband that I was kind of regretting not buying more and planting a whole tree row by our pond. He said, well while don't you go back and get them while I make dinner. (No lie!) So I fiddled around for a half hour and finally went.
(He didn't know this was my 3rd trip to various Lowes in the area)
The clerk remembered me, and said I sure hope you weren't coming back for more trees! Someone just left here 10 minutes ago with ALL of them.
Funny thing is, on the way there, I passed a house where a couple was unloading trees and lining them out on their driveway. They had the blue Lowes wrap on them. My thought was, good, they needed trees. That house has been there for 10 years and the previous owners never planted a tree.
On the way home, looking at that house, my thought was, glad I don't have to dig all those holes! Happy they got a deal too. But bad timing on my part.

Suga,
I sure hope all your plants don't rot. Of all the types of disasters, flooding has got to be the worst. A town I taught in flooded 17 years ago, and they had to shut down the schools for 2 weeks. (That was when I met my husband!) When the kids came back, all their clothes and books smelled like mold for months. The school was moldy too, and many of us ended up with pneumonia and colds that lasted all winter. To this day, i react strongly to mold.
Local stores and nurseries came out ahead, though. Lots of people spent a lot of money replacing landscaping and furnishings. You may find that your Lowes and HD stores fully restock with all kinds of great plants.
Floods bring in tremendous weed seeds, so people who have never needed weed killer will probably have to resort to using it.
So sorry. Group hug

Dear Lord, Suga, has it really been almost 30 years since Hugo? Where DOES the time go? Of course, I can remember evacuating out of Biloxi before Camille and that was in '69! I was a VERY young child for that one. I remember the first hurricane I went through with my hubby and his mom who was with us. Growing up in FL made me accustomed to them but my poor MIL was scared to death and it was only a Cat.3.

Cindi, you are priceless!

I am waiting for the 75 percent off the bulbs

Nope I put them in pots. It is my winter indoor garden activity. This year I picked up four large I mean very large pots from Lowes that were originally 60.00 for 8.00. I have the soil in them in the garage ready to be planted. After they bloom and die down I will put them in the garden.

I have acres of land to garden, and a plant obsession of tropical, succulents and every thing that grows. I have to do this cheap. *Blush*

I have planted those clearance bulbs in Jan and they did ok. Almost all of them came up and most of them bloomed, the ones that didn't bloom will probably bloom this year. After I bought them I stored them cool, dry and planted them when we had a warm spell and the ground was thawed. Paid like $1 pkg after Thanksgiving.
