I had to make the rounds this a.m. (WM, Lowes' , Cost +/ World Market, Target...and while in Lowe's thought I'd give a quick look in the nursery just in case they had the stipa I've been looking for.....well, they didn't, but they did have these. I was seduced.

I really should know better than to look in the nursery. It would be much cheaper in the long run for me to just order what I'm looking for instead of seeing everything else.....

But if you ordered it, you'd have to pay shipping & you can buy another plant or two for the price of shipping! (Aren't I helpful? ) Love the first one, Miscanthus 'Gold Bar'!

Well, that's always been my justification, but I always find so much more when looking for just one....or just 'hearing' about one (such as the aloysia virgata mentioned on the 'fragrant' forum...heard about it, had to have it. Or just seeing pics...see it, have to have it. I need blinders and ear muffs. I'm fighting the urge to collect hydrangeas...totally inappropriate for my property and water bills...and rebecca goes and shows off pics of her hydrangeas and now I have to have all of those...lol..
I hate having to order...the grasses at Lowe's were $5 a gallon....that's hard to beat and I was surprised at what a great selection the Lowe's here had today.

I just planted one of my Miscanthus 'Gold Bar' yesterday, got 2 of them as tiny plugs in a co-op and they are finally large enough to plant out in the garden. Look forward to seeing it mature, the are so cool looking!

I think they were pretty popular at Lowe's..lol..there was one left, same with the chasmanthium and only two of the miscanthus 'Fireworks'. I think they'd had quite a few as there was a lot of empty space around them.

I succumbed to a couple of noid salvia at OSH today - can't beat $3.99 for a large 4" plant... But you're right, Sherry, the plants in catalogs are so much more interesting! I had a happy surprise, today - all the cuttings I tried to root took - several salvias, hydrangeas, tibouchina, fuchsias ! After a few years when I didn't have much luck with cuttings, I realize that it apparently makes all the difference if you take the cuttings in the spring.

Cuttings work best when the plants are in a strong growth period. I'm not seriously doing a lot of cuttings right now,but doing it the lazy way...plopping a few of this and that into water on my windowsill....right now rooted lemon verbena, African Blue basil, salvia elegans / pineapple sage, Rose of Sharon, salvia elegans/ Golden Delicious, White Adriatic fig, have some cuttings of the aloysia virgata and gardenia in water to see if they'll root like that...don't usually root hydrangeas in water, but think I'll cut some tomorrow and see how they do also. I don't need more of the plants,I just can't help myself...lol..

Now you'll be taking cuttings of everything.....lol

Yes, I'll definitely go crazy with cuttings next spring! I used to start cuttings in water - seemed to have the magic touch, until I had kids, 26 years ago (weird, huh?), then didn't have time to try to root plants, until a couple of years ago - but I haven't had much luck rooting in water recently; now, I have much better luck rooting in a soil/perlite mix.

I root things in various ways, but water is the easiest if I don't really want to bother with something. Depends on what it is I'm rooting and how many. Even with the Anthony Parker salvias, I rooted 300 of those in water. Years ago I rooted fig cuttings by the advised method...cuttings in winter, keep them in fridge until...yada, yada......the last two I tried 4-5 weeks ago I just stuck in water and they did fine...lol..
