Thanks Arlyn, I never potted an iris before. I like the idea of being able to move them around.

I won't bid against anyone else either - unless I'm the first bidder and someone bids mine up.
Otherwise, I'm done. These are for 3 rhizomes - and that leaves us some room for sharing!

Jan, I'm with you. One single bid, that's it.

I asked the daughter about it being so late in the year;

"Can rhizomes be stored indoors over the winter? We are in zone 5A and I fear it would be too late to plant outdoors. What do you think"

Here's the response;

"Many of the people who are buying irises do live in CA, TX and FLA. They get to take advantage of clearance sales with little or no risk. We have heard it done both ways. (We did live in Nebraska) If you plant outside at this point, you would want to mulch pretty heavily until the daffodils start to grow, then the plants could be uncovered. The reason is that the freeze thaw cycles can cause heaving of the rhizome because it will have very little roots. I have heard of people placing a brick on top of the rhizome to keep it in place that first winter. It acts as a heat sink and holds the plant in place as well.

They could be potted and stored in a place that is protected – a garage or basement. They can also be stored in a paper bag in a place that stays cool. You would not want to store them at indoor room temperature unless they were potted and watered a bit here and there. One of our customers told us they kept the rhizomes in sawdust over winter. We certainly do understand if it is too much risk or work to try and over winter them there. We certainly would want you to get to see bloom from them!"

Very gracious people!!

Question:
I've have never bid on anything on e bay. If you "buy it now" and put a bid on one of the Iris how do they combine the shipping?
It looks like you have to pay for shipping on the bought Iris and then wait for the bids to be finished for the bidding Iris.
I wrote down the names of the Iris the ATPer's Wanted and I won't bid against you either.

Barbara, the Buy it Now feature usually has a few days grace after bidding, particularly if
you send a note explaining that you are still bidding on others - just click on the seller
and you'll see a "contact seller" option.

For "Buy It Now" you use the "Add To Cart" key for multiple buys. That feature will apply the combined shipping discount. If you don't use "Add To Cart" you will not get the discount. In that case, just inform the seller and they will give you a partial refund for the shipping overage.

So I did the "buy it now" on Lunch in Madrid (nobody had that one listed here) so I might get it cheaper IF nobody else bids on it. Correct?

No, Barbara. If you chose Buy It Now, that is a fixed price direct sale--no bidding. It is automatically taken off the page, and you will pay the listed Buy It Now price, plus shipping.
If you are going to bid on another one, contact the seller and let her know so they understand you want to wait to pay until you see if you win the auction.

Yes, bidding can get it cheaper for you. Now here's the deal. If you bid on one item that expires in 1 day and bid on another that expires in 2 days, just let the seller (thru Contact Seller or Ask A Question buttons) know that you are bidding on another item and they will wait for the second auction to expire. Assuming you win both, they will combine the auctions, apply the discount and send you one invoice.

Jan, you are welcome. The only reason I know this stuff is every Spring/Summer I have my garden pay for itself thru selling plants. It's a royal pain for the seller to set up but it makes life for a buyer real simple.

Now here is another little gem you may not know. If a seller is selling a bunch of stuff, like Iris Sisters is doing, you might be able to make a deal with them. For instance, say you see three auctions that are expiring soon and none of them have bids. It is worth contacting the seller to see if you can combine all three for not only combined shipping but at a lower price.

Barb, too bad you bid on Lunch in Madrid. I have that one, and barring a rot issue, I should have a few to share.

Well it show there are two bids on Lunch in Madrid. At the moment I'm the highest bidder. So even thought it showed "buy it now" I guess I did not buy it now.

That's ok Tom, I have it too. *Blush* Hurray!
It's just that it is sooo pretty that I wanted the clump effect faster. This is one of those times I'm impatient *Blush*

Barbara, forgot to say that once a bid had been placed on an item that offers both Auction and Buy It Now, the BIN feature is no longer available. The item has to then go through the auction process to the end.

Correct. You can change from "bid" to "buy it now" at any time buy hitting the "buy it now" button. But there is no real reason to do that if you are the highest bidder. You may want to do that if you get outbid but the price is still below the "buy it now" price.

I just did Buy It Now on the one I really wanted. If bidding gets crazy at the end, then it could well go over the price I payed with Buy It Now, especially since the Buy It Now price is only 4 dollars more. There were several people "watching" the item, meaning they would have been bidding closer to the end time.

I got First Avenue and since they are sending 5 rhizomes (!!!) my $19.50 is rather a steal. Guess I'll have this type of clump in no time!
