What a cool looking spider but I don't think I want to run into that one up close and personal. LOL

Alice, you don't have to bump into them, did you know that those long anchor threads can be removed and tacked on again nearby/somewhere else? Otherwise I would have them in my face all Summer long in the cage. :-)
Cool looking spider! Lovely Vanda too! I think I need a Den crumenatum.

I can't recall ever being bitten by one of those spiders. Yes, their long anchor threads are easy to detach and move, not sticky but quite strong, and they mark them with little white 'flags" so you can see them pretty easily, too. I encourage them to build webs up in the top of my pool cage, as they do a great job of catching no-see-ums and other tiny bugs that get through the screening. My pool guy and my garden helper both think I am the Crazy Spider Lady. Shrug! Big Grin

I got my Den. crumenatum from Carter & Holmes, Ursula. A nice birthday gift from my kids! This is at least 5 rounds of little blooms since March, although I must admit they don't last more than a few days. I'm hoping they will last longer in the cooler weather - IF we ever get any cool weather!

it would NEVER occur to me to relocate a spider web anchor...you guys are so clever! I had one of those once in NC...it looks like an alien or a Jim Henson
creation.
Elaine, your Vanda is gorgeous!
Here's a new picture of one I posted a few days ago before it was fully open...sometimes I get a little too excited to wait!
It's one of the $ 3. Onc. NOID from Apopka

Such a cheery Oncidium for sure, very pretty!

Elaine, thanks for the tip! I think I get myself a crumenatum next Spring, when things go outside again.

Those cute little dancing ladies Onc's can get to monstrous size if you treat them right - this is one Jim and I saw on our very first excursion to Apopka in 2012. Jim Krull said they used to take it to shows and it filled up the whole bed of a pickup truck so they had to stop hauling it around.

I was so cute back in those days. Whistling As for the spider, it looks like a spiny-backed orbweaver to me. They are common all over Florida.

Both are nice, Ursula, but where is the little guy that carries the Angraecum around on his head?

I just installed OrchidWiz 12.0 so I am all up to date. I also signed up for the 2016 quarterly updates and version 13.0 due out the end of next year to the tune of $100. Now that I have it, it would be hard to do without it. So, my friends, we are ready for a new year full of unnecessary name changes.

OrchidWiz 12.0 huh? It says something else about all the name changes, that OrchidWiz hasn't been around all that long but the silly boffins are already working on the 13th edition.

For all my grousing, I must admit its awfully nice of you to keep us updated on all that Boffinese, Jim.

For any who don't know what a boffin is:
Credit Wikipedia:
"A boffin is British slang for a scientist, engineer, or other person engaged in technical or scientific work. The original World War II conception of war-winning researchers means that the term tends to have more positive connotations than related terms like spod, egghead, nerd, or geek"

snipped from The Word Detective:
"In popular usage, “boffin” carries a connotation of grudging admiration for a group who, while they probably lack fashion sense and may be socially inept, still hold the keys to our next cool gizmo. “Boffin” is also sometimes loosely applied to any sort of expert in any field, although the more obscure the field, the more likely you are to be labeled a “boffin.” "

Yeah, ain't it great? I really liked "the more obscure the field, the more likely you are to be labeled a boffin . . ."

In fact, it's probably not the boffins who are making up all the outrageous new names, though. Maybe we need to come up with another eclectic term for the creative and misled souls who make up names like Guarianthe, (no, that one's not nearly unpronounceable enough! ). How 'bout Collierara? Mr or Ms. Collier must have paid someone off to name an orchid after them especially when it was already named after Mr. Gerber . . .

I know you're all probably tired of seeing these, but really my Spathoglottis are magnificent at the moment. Saw several more colors including white, yellow and a red/white at Lowe's yesterday when I went to pick up some mulch, and another sort of 'sunset' colored one followed me home. Just love them, and they are so easy to bloom.
