This has long been a favorite among the 'dark' colors. I use the word dark with caution because it can be seen in varying shades of blackish/burgundy/mahogany depending on lighting; and also depending on one's frame of reference for colors. This was a difficult lesson for me to learn as a beginning daylily gardener. Shade and overcast conditions always (generally?) give the best light for photographing. This depends of course on individual preference, degree of expertise and personal experience.
As for performance, I find this to be a care-free plant with little trouble if any. I gauge about everything I grow here in Zone 5a/b according to a plants tolerance to weather extremes. This can range from blistering, humid summers all the way to Arctic-like severity in our coldest winters! In all these conditions American Revolution seems to shrug off all the climatic adversity. It multiplies well, and blooms with a good number of scapes and buds.
I photographed this image in early morning light without losing color.
