Judy, I've had lupines grow and bloom from a seed mix, that's why I decided to try them.

I'm trying delphiniums for the second time. I tried them in 2011, but they didn't last due to being planted in a bed with full sun all day. This time, they'll be planted in a bed that is partially shaded. I'll let you know how they do.

Thanks Ronnie!

Sandy, we've had really crazy weather this winter. We've had temps in the mid to high 70's one day, then freezing the next. It got really warm for one week, and the plants grew very well. I've also had to water the jugs several times because it had gotten too hot.

Very funny Sandy B Hilarious! !

I intially used Jungle Growth Professional mix in the containers, but I found it had too much debris. I used Sta-Green Moisture Max Mix with fertilizer, and this may have helped the plants grow better.

I'll definitely be using this brand again next year.

I don't know where you all find these odd soils and mixes? Sounds good!
I do not have any of the OLD Nurseries around here. There was a S. States--but it became
another similar place--but 2x the price of everything.
I am not going to drive miles and miles to somewhere to get bags of soil!!! NOPE!

I have always used the Pro Mix as it is aerate by a lot of Perlite.
I still have to make a trip to Richardson's to get a 2cf bale of Lambert's Pro Mix.
I go through a 2cf bale of this every year.
With this off and on weather--it has not been on my mind..seriously!

All my seeds under the lights are up! good grief.....Don't know what I will do with them????
The 1st ones up were the Cardinal Climber. Next=2 pots of Moon Vine....
Lot's of others too...I hate to have to think about what to do next??
The beds are NOWHERE ready to be planted!!

My WS milk jugs contents seem to be sprouting too. I peeked...I just did the WS for fun...
now I will have seedlings to worry over.. Swap is coming up--5/16 at Jills..

Not too excited about any f this..Getting a bit "Old hat"....

OK! This "Old hat" is falling asleep. Time for bed.....zzzzzzzzzzzzz Gita

my winter sowing was a bit disastrous this year because containers got too much sun and dried out. however, the containers in shade sprouted and I have some bleeding hearts and balsam...transplanted it to shade garden today between rainstorms. with the cloudy rainy that is forecast these should have time to get acclimated to new home. ive always wanted bleeding hearts, cant wait to see if they will bloom first year.

I'm kind of wondering what I'm going to do with all of my seedlings, too... especially if a lot of my WS seeds sprout! (and I still have lots to start yet Hilarious! )

Me too Sandy Hilarious! I have about 125 containers plus what I direct sowed and my zinnias that still need to be sowed. My germination so far is really good. What was I thinking Whistling

Judy, had your containers sprouted? If not a good watering may save them.

I'm wintersowing for the first time this year, starting small. So far so good: have sprouts for spinach, broccoli, and kolhrabi. (exciting!)
Planning to start some more, even though it's getting close to time that I can direct seed somethings. I think anything that should be started ahead of time will benefit from the greenhouse effect in containers outside.
The only other decent place for starting seeds is in my south-facing office window, but even it doesn't get as much direct light now that there's a condo in the way.
Still want to start seeds for herbs, bok choi (which I've read does well from being transplanted when have a few leaves), ground cherry, etc.
I have a few edible flowers to start too, but mostly thinking about veggies.

Advice?

I've done tomatoes the winter sow method and have had great success. They start off a bit slower but catch up real quick. I'm also zone 6 and do mine beginning of April.

Welcome! Peggy!

I also do not have a great space inside for seed starting and my husband does not want me using lights to grow.

I use my jugs to Spring sow seeds also. Mostly annual flowers. It works great. I can get a jump on growing and I don't have to harden off the seedlings.

I've got sprouts in my containers (spinach & broccoli) and there's freezing temps/snow expected this weekend. Should I cover the ones with sprouts so they don't freeze, or just leave them to let nature do its thing?

Also, put out 2 more jugs this week: garlic chives and bok choi. maybe a little early but what the hell.

When it gets below 40 at night I toss a flannel sheet over my jugs and remove it in the morning. However I grow flowers. Those are cold weather veggies so they might be ok

I always do the same, though, like Jennifer, I grow flowers. But throwing a sheet over them at night is one of those "better safe than sorry" things.

Its 9:45 am here and temp is only 29. We won't get over 32 today. Tonight's low is forecast at 23. I've never had so many sprouts before and had temps like this. I have my stuff covered with clear plastic shower curtains. At night I add flannel sheets over that. I just wonder if today is gonna just be too cold. Maybe I should move it all into the garage?!

All that sprouted for me was yellow lupine and 1 Gladstone onion out of 6. Should I replant or is it too soon?

Snowing like crazy today and only 35...I have to take my chances way too many jugs to move inside Grumbling Keeping my fingers crossed they are okay. All of my salvia and agastache have sprouted as have some annuals.

@Littlecheryl I was going to plant out some of my lupines but decided to wait a bit because of the temps. I don't know what kind of weather you're having but I'm z6 and am going to give it a bit longer.
