Sounds like something I would like to try....my son, who lives 40 min. to the north of me in the 'icebox' section of CT has wonderful luck with peppers, both hot & sweet.....don't know why they are such a problem for me.....

If you have poor luck with peppers I really would absolutely say for you to try the Japanese Peppers. So easy to grow and they just set and make peppers like crazy.

Hi all, question about harvesting carrots. . . I have been growing them for the first time this year, and simply harvesting them on an 'as needed' basis. I am in zone 6A. Should I be pulling them all out now? How late can I leave them in the ground? Actually I have the same question for beets & leeks. And swiss chard & ksle. When do I need to harvest these vegies?

I harvest them either 'when needed' or after the 1st frost....have kept carrots until the ground is quite cold, but not frozen......

Pulled out all the last of the summer squash plants today. I have been pulling them already so I really had a lot of plants since there were many to be pulled and tired up for the yard waste pickup. Pulled two rows of tomatoes also. Much more to do.

Yikes, I have a ton of yard waste bundled up and put out by the curb today for pickup Wednesday. Too tired to do more today but I got much done. Hopefully can get more out there tomorrow.

Still many Sweet 100's and lots of tiny green tomatoes on the zillion volunteers. I'm guessing they must be related to Sungold but need them to ripen so I can taste test them.

I picked a few toms yesterday....small, but sweet....also picked green beans for dinner....have some beets to use up, maybe make pickled beets. Rita, how nice that the town picks up garden waste....nothing is picked up here....you can haul leaves to the dump for no charge, everything else costs money to dump.....I throw everything in my large compost pile down at the bottom of the yard....top it with brush, & get a burn permit every 3 years.....

Yes, the garbage pickup is very handy. Regular trash twice a week. Recycle stuff once a week and yard waste once a week. If there is a Holiday in any week then yard waste is not picked up on that week. Otherwise they pick up.

We have to bag leaves and put them at the curb for pickup. Comes in handy for me as I go collect them and use them as mulch in my garden.

I already pulled out 13 more tomato plants today and now I have to go out and bundle all those up and put them at the curb next to all the stuff I pulled and bundled yesterday.

Poor services here.....garbage picked up once a week....recycling, every other.....no yard stuff at all! Taxes aren't low either! And we have a volunteer fire & ambulance corps.....the only source of water for a fire is down by the dam....The one house in my area that burned a few years ago, was a total loss by the time anyone got there....it was a very old house, though, folks got out with only the clothes they were wearing......it's almost totally rebuilt now, in a barn style....looks nice overlooking the dam.....off track, I know.....will be using up the beets this afternoon.....

I am ready happy that we have good garbage and yard waste pickup here. By the time I was finished yesterday I had a small mountain of pulled out tomatoes squash and bean plants all bundled up in lots of bundles. All gone this morning!! Hurray!

I didn't work on pulling out more tomato plants today because it will be an entire week before pickup. Maybe two weeks as I am not sure if they will pick up Wednesday due to us having Monday Columbus Day. Tends to mess up yard waste pickup day.

Don't pull them for now. I have to start on mine as I have so many plants. Otherwise I would leave them.

Picked tomatoes today before the rain started. I knew I had cherry tomatoes to pick and I really wanted to get those or else they would crack when it rained. But surprisingly I had a fair amount of large beefsteak types also. I mean in season I would have said not much of a harvest but for Oct 8th it was a good harvest.

Of course my cumbers are long gone, vines pulled out and so are the last of my summer squash plants so really tomatoes were the only veggies to harvest today.

I have some larger heirloom types that just don't want to turn red. Have to rely mostly on the red hybrids.
