March is a lovely month in Florida, Alice!

I toured the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens yesterday with my brother and his new girlfriend, Eva. We had a delightful time, as always and saved the best for last, the orchid greenhouse. I tried to get pictures of tags to go with the orchids as much as I could, but some of these pictures are my brother's, and he could care less about the names . . .
(he was amazed at the high prices in their plant shop, too, until I explained that I almost never buy orchids there)

They were impressed by the Den spectabile but Eva (a foodie, not a plant person) made the comment that the flowers really look like deep-fried calamari - I've been wondering forever what it is they reminded me of . . .. A gorgeous Motes vanda, and Den antennatum:

Vanda Pachara Delight, and a tiny Pleurothallis ( I think). The flower spikes were about the size of my finger, and the flowers very tiny but perfect little orchid shapes.

At first glance you almost miss the tiny flowers on this one, such a nice lush plant, too.

Another of Martin Motes' vandas - he seems to go for the coppery red shades a lot!

Nice, Elaine! Wow, you are right. Their prices are high. I've seen better flowers much less expensive.

It's a tourist trap, Melissa. What can I say? They have great sales for the members in the fall and I get bare-root divisions there sometimes for $5.

I know, and even with my member discount, $50 is too much for me to invest in an orchid I'm way too likely to kill.

They do charge a little bit to gawk at Selby, but you get to gawk at the whole huge garden and two beautiful houses on the bay. If you have a membership at another botanical garden you get in for a huge discount, if not free.

The MOS had a nice exhibit at the OSOGSL in St. Louis this past weekend. I slaved away and got it set up with the help from two of our members. We had a blast and the exhibit looked great.

Great exhibit, Melissa. I like those mounts. It looks like y'all used a cypress knee for a mount. I like that.

Ursula, we expect a full report. This should be fun.

Is anyone up for an Apopka run? Jean (Quilter) and Tara would like to meet us there on the 25th. Please let me know.
