Many of our larger containers look fine but many were way under watered while we were away. I'm hoping to bring them back before frost, especially the geraniums we keep from year to year. If they don't have some nice herbaceous growth I don't think they will over winter well. Our cannas look really good, nice plump rhizomes, so they should do well.

I have some coleus I'd like to overwinter in pots. Would they be OK inside by a window?

I would think they could be alwright. If they tend to get lanky just keep them pinched back.
I take cuttings and grow new plants.
It was cold last night, we have a fire going this AM .
Reminded me its time to think about cuttings.
These are my faves this year.

This year I did not. I wanted to, but so much was going on in my life that I didn't even plant the containers this year.

I love love love Felix.
I don't keep whole coleus plants from year to year, I just take cuttings from my favorites. I am in Zone 6 and find it much easier. If I did keep whole plants I would cut them back hard and root the cuttings.

Leslie,
I am not set up for growlights but I do have a nice south facing living room window
I use small nursery pots with potting soil for my cuttings.
I dont take as many as I used to.
The biggest year was 2010 I think. I just got tired of watering all winter .
This pix is december 2010. I had a pair of ladder with boards and even had cuttings in my bathtub..

New to this thread, you all have such pretty summer containers, and I also love coleus. So after taking coleus cuttings I created a fall/winter container for front porch? What do you think? Anyone else doing fall makeover?

I am about to move things into the greenhouse. Waiting for this storm to move past and then see how fast the temperatures drop before I begin the move. With my new little Air Plants to play with I am about to relax over the winter as far as flowers go. This winter will be interesting since the Holiday Plants look so sick from the salt in the water. Oh well. I will think of something. At least the air plants only need water every week and I can use bottled water for them. I would rather have plants than soft water but that is just me.

Oh I hope all is well after the storm JB. I'm new so just popping around finding out all kinds of wonderful things. I love coleus. Brings back childhood memories when mom always had dad plant them in our planter in the garage. I never even thought about making cuttings. Now that we have a sunroom I may get brave and try it. I love all of the wonderful container ideas. How long do snapdragons normally last. ..I'm in Alabama so I would love to try a couple of these ideas. I noticed that some of these have ivy also. Once temps drop do you just bring it in? Deb

@plantnut welcome to the site

You are from Alabama must be similar to my zone? I'm 7b and all four plants in the container, including snap dragons, usually make it through winter of in a sheltered area. The can handle a freeze if only for a day or so. Look how my container has grown already in just one week!
