I'm sorry, but I don't feel very sorry for groundhogs. They should be able to swim & there is water on both sides of the fence. Interesting that they can climb a chain link fence.

I found out they climb fences from a gentleman we picked up a tree from.. around his Chinese veggie garden.. he had corrugated aluminum strips like a cap on top of the fence.. I asked him why.. and he said it stops the critters from being able to climb up and over.. they climb up and hit there heads .. like a squirrel guard on a bird feeder pole...looked at him and said a GH can climb a fence??? Blinking he assured me they can do it with ease .. wish I wouldn't have felt funny to take photos of his set up .. after he gave me a tour of the garden I didn't want to push it... after we left I thought I should have asked if he had anything in the ground to stop them from digging.. too late

More critters can climb than you would think. Armadillos can go over 21" height. You wouldn't think so to look at them but there it is. And foxes can climb trees. Google it.

i got one a couple weeks back and buried it back in its hole. either a critter dug it out or there are more - filled up the hole again and noticed it back open so i think there are more - put the trap right at the hole and blocked around it with sticks so whatever wants to go in or out needs to go through the trap - nothing there this am

Quite possibly. Hmmmm.... WAS healthy.... past tense. I hope they don't have ground hogs here. They weren't were I came from down south but we had armadillos --- WAS healthy applied there too.

Groundhogs bring out the worst in me. Yesterday I threw bird seed over the fence into the field next door so they would not come to my yard to eat it and when I looked out, he was in my yard, digging a hole to get over into the field. He must be under my little barn next to the greenhouse. If Barney were still alive he could have got him in the butt, because he was stuck under the chain link fence and I was not fast enough to hit him. I can not shoot him since I only have a 38 here and if I miss I do not know where it would go. Besides, it would make such a mess of the fat little bugger. The 410 is next door locked up with the other shotguns. I can't win.
Grumbling .
