@sallyg, don;t feel to bad for them. I try to support them because it is a family business that has been in the area for over 40 yrs. It was her mother's business before she died.

My daughter gives me a gift certificate for them for Mother's Day, Birthday, Christmas. I end of giving them at least $1,000 bucks a year with all the gift certificates and the extra money I spend for my need of retail plant therapy for, flower pots, garden ornaments, Christmas ornaments through the year. They have a little bit of everything garden along with a large plant selection.

@NJBob,
I will protect it but they said it is one of the hardy zone 6.

Cinta you might be fine in 6b. I know a couple of people that have them here and at the garden center I am at the growers recommend protecting them but I am the top of 6a.

Picked up 8 plants for 8 $ a few days ago at Lowes close-out. Unfortunately, I got there a couple days late to really get a bunch of stuff. hehe Like I really needed 8 more plants. But hey - I got some good stuff. On original prices I would have paid > 200 $.

Two of the best scores were a Pyracanthra and an Akebia.

Was at Lowe's last night - - not for plants - - but had to peek. Only thing that caught my eye was a totally dead plant, and not one I like anyway, but it was in a 6" hanging basket. So I sprang for $1, dumped the plant while still at the store, and went home with a great little hanging basket that I really needed. Bingo!

At Lowe's, keep an eye on the cart where they put the used pots for recycling. You can often get plastic nursery pots and baskets for free. Green Grin!

I frequently buy discounted plants at Lowe's just for the pots! Even the black 'gallon' grower pots. They're great for dividing hosta.

They're even better for potting up caladium. For the past couple of years, I've been starting my caladium indoors in big pans. Once the weather warms up, I transfer them to the gallon pots that we then place around the yard. Sometimes, we'll sink the pots into the ground. The best part is, come fall, it's easy to lift the caladium for winter storage. I just gather the pots, dump them out and pick through the dirt to pull the bulbs. Right now, I have 7 flats of bulbs all washed off and drying. The big question is where am I going to put them for the winter. (It's twice as many as last year.) And, I've already been informed that I will be buying some new varieties in the spring. (Not that I have a problem with that. Whistling )

I'm not a huge fan of Gerberas, but I bought three earlier for the bright plastic pots- 3$ each. Not bad for a pot and a plant. The dollar basket story is great a winner.
Plant it and they will come.

Yep, I'll cry all the way to the web site to order those caladium.

I've just about wrapped up my new hosta pen. I bought a 10x20 'car port' back in the spring to use for a veg garden. Well, the neighbors trees had the nerve to add more mass this year, so there went the sunny spot. Oh well, time to re-purpose. I wrapped the 4' deer fence around it and moved all of my hosta pots, all 350-ish, in there. Now let those four-legged beasties get at them in the spring!

It sounds like you're about ready for Jack Frost, Rick. We have the advisory for tonight and I'm so totally unprepared. My intent was to cover some things with frost cloth, but they are also calling for rain on Sunday into Monday. My succulents which are already under frost cloth have to be placed under shelter, as cold and wet means rot and death to them. Houseplants on the porch stoops have to come in. Oh, what a day it's going to be running around to collect and protect these plants. Sighing!

BTW, I bought a quart sized Red mum for $1 yesterday while I was out of town and a pot of succulents marked down. Fun is over, I've got to get busy. May everyone's plants stay safe and comfy this cold and frosty weekend. Thumbs up

I've decided that my problem isn't rescuing reduced or clearance price plants,It's that I rescue too many at full price! LOL
