I used to work for a company that only allowed plants if you had a 'real' office. In other words, no plants for anyone except the CEO and Operations Director. Glad I'm gone from there.

your work doesn't allow plants ?! Thumbs down
Can't imagine.
My windowsill is jam-packed. The plants have become legends; people come by to see my plants; oh, they say hi to me, too, but when the hoya go into bloom, I get a lot of company.

Yes, I work in critical care. Some plant material can kill compromised patients. We're also not allowed to bring cats into the building, as a single cat flea can kill some patients.

I am certainly glad that my workplace is not telling me I cannot have plants. I do want to bring one of my plands home from work anyway. I need more plants at home.

So sad. Two nights ago I went to Lowe's only to find no clearance rack. The Walmart near me has a section, but apparently the one I stop at on my way home from work does not. Tomorrow, I will go take a closer look!

This was at one of the agencies where I used to work. If you see things like this, please respect it because it is about keeping people alive who have severe immunological respiratory problems. When they are at their weakest, one grain of errant pollen floating invisibly through the air can literally kill them.

It is not about whether or not your boss likes plants. It's much more serious.

Today I "rescued" 4 mini cyclamen and a mini Phaleanopsis. (They really didn't need rescuing, but they came home with me anyway.) Also some seed for this years garden.

Thank You! for alerting us to the seriousness/criticalness of this warning in a medical setting. People's lives are much more precious than flowers/plants. In that case, silk flowers may be more appropriate. I've given up wearing perfumes, (as much as I love fragrance) for the sake of my friends who are hypersensitive or have respiratory problems. I also have asthma, so I know how miserable it feels to have breathing issues.

Actually, the surgery centers I've worked in didn't allow artificial plants either. Unless washed off regularly, they can accumulate all kinds of crap floating in the air.

At super fancy hospitals where they treat extremely ill people, sometimes they have a gift shop in-house where you can buy plastic plants or balloons or little stuffed animals that have been decontaminated. But that's not at all common.

Even in general hospitals though there could be patients who would be harmed by plant materials in the air. This is especially true on critical floors like Stepdowns and ICUs. Sometimes you just never know.
Keep going!

Hello
I am mmmintu Working at Mech Limited Company and Your answer is about I'm just distraught over this. My daughters and I went to home depot looking for some plants. We went through the plant department and found a cart with plants that were and marked down to $2.00, so I started putting them in my cart. There was lavender, histas, and a few other perennials taht I was not familir with being a newbie. As I was doing this an employee stopped me and told me taht they were not for sale(there was not sign). When I questioned him a bout it his answer was that they received full stor credit so they they threw them away. I was disgusted. We walked out leaving and themn found some hibiscus plants for $7.97 and most of them were in terrible

shape. So I went back to this man who I found was a magager and he told me he could not give me a discount that they get full credit. I told him what I thought about them being put into a dumpster adn he told me tath that is not exactly wre they are put. He said they are put into a baler, crushed and made into compact bales. Thank You!

My Home Depot does put those plants on clearance. Bought some gorgeous geraniums there Friday for $1 - marked down because there were no blooms. Also got a houseplant for 50% that was in great shape. The other one in my area doesn't do this.

Look at it this way. I walked into the garden center there Friday and asked if they had any tomatillo plants. The guy took me to the tomato plants. I said, no, not tomatoes. Tomatillos. He said, I don't know what those are. These people don't know anything about plants and they don't care, so why should they care about some of them dying? It's very maddening. Grumbling

Welcome! @mmmintu

Yes, Home Depot is notoriously bad about discounting plants. In the event that they do mark things down, they only stick around for a day or two, depending on when the plant rep comes in. Once the rep comes in and the store gets credit for them, the plants have to be destroyed. It is a huge waste.

Now, Lowe's, on the other hand..... Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

Because of the weather, Lowe's has already started discounting plants. Over the passed couple of days, I've picked up 30 Aquilegia 'Little Lanters' and 24 wooly thyme, at $1.00 each! I also picked up 2 Carolina Jessamine, gallon pot, for $8.00 each.

When I was there today, they had all kinds of pansies, dianthus, sedums and more, all marked down. Sometimes, if you can time it right, the garden person is out there with their price gun. Then it's every plant for itself! Last spring, I filled up a cart with stuff that has just been marked down. I looked at what was being marked down, picked out some nice ones, and had them marked down while in my cart. It was great!

When I was at Lowe's on Friday, they had all of the racks inside because of the snow and ice that we got. Things were looking rather ragged under the florescent lights. Not that that stopped me! Today, everything was back outside and looking a bit better. I don't think the casual gardener is ready for stuff yet with the cold temps. However, we die hards know that because of the weather, stores will be marking down early because stuff isn't looking at its' peak anymore. Works for me!

I have a very good friend that completely landscaped her new yard (from scratch) with perennials out of the dumpsters of various big box stores around here. That was about 18 years ago, so I don't know if anyone can do that now. I sure wish I had picts of her yard... It is BEAUTIFUL Hurray!

Those were the good old days. Now, a lot of places get their stuff from central nurseries that assume all of the risk. And, if something doesn't sell or make it through the season, the store gets credit and the remains don't just go into a dumpster anymore. Now, it goes into a compactor so people can't pick through the trash.

A more or so ago, I was in HD in the lighting department. A woman was there asking about a chandelier that she recently purchased. She was asking about buying a replacement shade or something like that from the display, but she couldn't find the display any more. The salesperson told her that they had just redone the lishting displays and everything went into the compactor. She wasn't happy.
