Latest blooms

NOID, like the feathering look on the petals
Thumb of 2016-05-28/microb/6479c2

Another NOID, only bloomed once a couple of years ago. More buds coming but hope for better quality bloom. Need to take cuttings of this one.

Thumb of 2016-05-28/microb/3dc39d

This one is Mystic. I got this cutting from my neighbor in February and let the bud take its chance so just got the bloom and no new growth. Nice to have it on the dining table for two days

I really like your feathered NoID. And Mystic is a very pretty shade of lavender pink.

One of the dancers at ballroom dancing was handing out pink epiphyllum blooms to some of the women. I'm getting a piece tomorrow and taking him a started plant of my NoID medium pink and a cutting off our yellow plant.

I now have 3 Epis and they are all outside in this humid, hot weather. Would you believe it is 90 deg. and sunny here in Wrightstown, NJ today. I have everything watered and planted and transplanted and now I can enjoy my fruits of labor ...wish I was able to do more but I should be happy with what I can do at my age. I have Vista Sun, Ric Rac and the red baby from the old disocactus ackermanii plant I had years ago. I am so excited to watch them grow.

I have been enjoying everyone's gorgeous blooms now for weeks while waiting for mine to do something! We had a chilly Spring until a week ago when day time temps jumped to the low nineties! No complaints on my part!!
My Epiphyllums started to open yesterday, finally!!
All of these are noids:
A few years ago I walked through Metropolitan Exchange/my favorite local garden store and spotted a bunch of small pots with upside down rooted cuttings! They looked healthy and well established but without tag. I don't mind, some of these turned out to be stunning, at least to us. Smiling

This one opened last night, and the flower is just about a foot across! I took some pics last night, but stopped at 11 pm and again early this morning. Not sure how long they stay open. (It seems the plant in my Orchid cage and the one on the deck are the same.)

Wow! Those are beautiful! Definitely worth the wait. Hurray!
Ackermanii had 2 blooms this week. Our tropical storm/ rainy couple of days beat the blooms so they never completely opened. Still it was gorgeous though. I don't have anymore buds coming that I have noticed, but hopefully I will get a few more.

Funny, I never thought of rooting an epi while it was still attached to the mother plant. I was looking at our epis today and found that one of them has rooted in a pot with a garten meister fuschia in it. It's probably a bigger plant than the fuschia now. Now I think I understand Ursula's comment about "upside down rooted cuttings".

This white and yellow NoID opened today. Waiting on our orange NoID.
Thumb of 2016-05-31/coboro/3732f4

Not sure if it is different than this white and yellow that bloomed before.

Beautiful in either case!

Regarding the upside down rooted cuttings -
some years ago, we visited Kakteen-Haage in Erfurt/Germany and their Epiphyllum greenhouse was most interesting! (Haage was one of the old Epi hybridizers) One of each please! Smiling Not really, since they would have to go through customs/needed treatment and paperwork on the way to the US. But I did notice that some of the longer Epi pieces dipped down into neighboring pots and rooted firmly there.
If one looks closely, many times we see roots at the tips of our plants. It seems that these types of Epiphyllums might propagate like that in nature if conditions are favorable?
So when I saw them rooted and sold like that in a garden store, I just had to grab a couple of pots.
Perhaps for some Epis, it might be an easy way to root some plants without worrying about rot or if was it calloused properly.

That's a nice bloom Carl. I like that yellow tip to the white petals.

I also have rooting branches in neighboring pots. I've got a Strictum that has grown a new plant in a neighboring pot. Nice strong growth to cut free and repot. I think its a natural way of spreading in the wild.

I love that yellow and white. It almost looks painted. Started about 24 cuttings in the greenhouse this morning. I hope they all root. I plan to repot most of my epies later in the summer and fill the pots. I just needed to root some more to fill them. LOL there is always an "excuse", right?

I had an epi grower friend visit this weekend and told him I might put up another greenhouse so I can spread the existing pots out a bit so they wouldn't be so crowded and take some weight off the hanging rails. Of course we ended up realizing I would not move the existing, just increase the count.

I think you are saying - now there's a scary thought, how many Epis can I accommodate. The grin says it all.

You have to have a sense of humor to read this, please.

Let me say we have a number of acres, most of which is untouched tropical rain forest. The garden around our house is about 1 1/2 acres so I could keep adding 10 x 20ft greenhouses to my existing greenhouses but my limitation is other tropical landscaping, age, time and cash in any order you like. Unfortunately my brain does not see any limitation.

Think of my greenhouse as the International Space Station. I just keep adding interconnected rooms.

So Linda just planted 24 cuttings, I'm assuming from her existing plants. Go forward two years. She now has 24 new plants from which she can take 3 cuttings each, that's 72 cuttings, plus another 24 she can take from the original plants. That's 96 new cuttings plus the 24 cuttings she just planted, equals 120 plants. Do the math 2 years after that, another 360 cuttings, now we have 480 plants. Rolling on the floor laughing That's my story for last few years. I don't see a little face for "insanity" Luckily I have a very understanding wife.

Anyway here are the latest blooms:

Charlies Angel - a nice bloom on a dying plant and I don't think I have a cutting

This pink NoID is new for us. I thought it wasn't all the way open this morning when I took the picture. But this evening it was still the same, kind of a daffodil cup shape.
