Mike - I don't recognize your user name from Cubits - if your new here I just wanted to say "Welcome!"

I used to grow Whooperee when I had a sales garden. It was always selling out!

Thanks, Juli.
I used to lurk a lot on cubits but didn't post much. My garden is really small compared to the huge spaces so many of you seem to have, so I'm limited on what I can grow.

Here's another red, but it isn't all that spectacular. It's what they refer to here as a "landscape daylily". It's sold at wholesale nurseries to contractors and has no official "name" that I'm aware of. The good thing about it is that it's evergreen and blooms 3 or 4 times a year. I know that sounds impossible, but it's true. Very prolific when it's in bloom, too.

For reasons I don't understand, most nurseries around here have horrible dl selections, if any at all. They all carry the same (boring) cultivars compared to what's available online.

Mike, I agree with you about many nurseries and their daylily selections. But, around here, we have 2 large, non chain nurseries that seem to have better selections. I have managed to acquire some nice newer cultivars at reasonable prices at these 2 nurseries. The "chain type" even if only regional and not national chains, seem to have the same boring ones. Stella del Oro, Red Volunteer....

At these other nurseries I have picked up Easy Ned, Stoplight, Firestorm, Catherine Neal + a few others.

And there is something to be said about species ones, that rebloom 4 times during the year - WOW! Even better, that it is red! ~j

Nice, Tabby! Welcome to ATP !

I love your name - Tabby!

By chance, have you been to The Cat Lady's Garden in Aurora, CO? It is an AHS Display Garden. I thought you might be in the same club. I've talked to her many times on the phone!

Another red I like a lot is Dottie Warrell's HOLLY DANCER. It is very hard to beat the clear red.
Thumb of 2011-09-21/daylily/139125

A darker red, but distinctive for it's scapes (and flowers) is Curt Hanson's SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS
It has these crazy "S" shaped scapes. The flowers often pinch and can be quite sculpted.

Juli, I have been to the catlady's garden years ago. I don't go anymore since I've really quit aquiring more daylilies since I have at least 200 and can't really fit anymore in. So I try not to tempt myself.

(Celeste and I posted at the same time.)

I'm only up to 40 at this point in time...and that's 30 more than I ever thought I'd find room for.

I only have 68, plus 28 seedlings that I hybridized, hope they bloom next year, and 16 seedlings from seed that I got from Sandy (seedsower).

In the spring I plan on giving a few of the ones that I don't care for to the neighbors, need some space for a few new ones! Hilarious!

I have 139 named and another couple dozen seedlings. Winnowing them out the next four days to make room for planting what's been sitting in containers all summer.
