Hi Linda & Margaret!
for rain and chilly, Linda! We're headed back to rain and chilly, and I'm actually looking forward to that after doing way too much yard work the last few days! It was wonderful being outside though, so I'm not complaining. This is the first dry week we've had in ages. Mark was more than ready to plant the field about three weeks ago, but the tractor would have got stuck in the mud. We've had one day of rain since it was planted, and it was enough to get the seeds going.
The ground is still really wet a couple of inches down, so I guess the rain just kick-started the process. We can't wait to see it growing, and most of it should have blooms, so I'm extra excited about that! Plus, we've got a couple of pheasants that have been in another field, so we're also hoping for babies!
If we can keep the deer out for a while, it should turn out okay. It's kind of fun to be able to say that we are farmers now, even though it is on a very small scale at this point.
Next year we hope to be able to add at least a couple more acres, if this field turns out okay, and we'll keep going from there. The best part is that Fish & Game gave us the seed for free, plus they are paying for all of the plants that we bought for the project.
Our share of the project is our labor, and it has been a lot of fun making 40 cages to go around the shrubs and trees.
Actually, now that I think about it, we've planted 48 shrubs and trees. So, 48 cages had to be made.
The dogs are doing great, and they are keeping us busy as always. I can't imagine how boring life would be without them.
I'll try to check in more often. I miss you all!
