Ordering late can get you into trouble as I forgot to check the box that says no substitutes. I am receiving lovely substitutes , while still looking for my "must haves" . I am SOLIDLY in the OFF TO A GOOD START CATAGORY. Running out of room without having to haul water so I am worried about next year. ( I am thinking of buying a big water tank and nozzle to put on the back of my ATV)
My pretty substitutes :
MADE IN THE SHADE
STROKE OF BRILLIANCE
STRAIGHT LACED
COME AWAY WITH ME
HUCKLEBERRY PIE
CONNIPTION FITHERE COME THE CLOWNS
ART GLASS
LITTLE LOVE SONG
COCONINO
BLANK VERSE

If anyone has grown these, I would love to hear your comments

I couldn't help notice that almost all the iris in your database "want list" are TBs, and yet what you received are pretty much all dwarfs and intermediates. Some are quite new and pretty. Some have received Honorable Mentions or Award of Merit.

However, yeah, order early and be sure to check the "no substitutions" check box. That way, your dollars and garden space go toward things that are more likely on your wants list.

This summer I finally culled out almost all the substitutions I have ever received, in order to make room for things I really wanted.

Daisy Do: since I live so high up, It was suggested to me that IBs, SDBs, and BBS might be more reliable, so recently I have been ordering them to try. Plus, I have a hillside garden so it would be easy to show them off and extend my bloom times. Wish me luck!

Teresa, that sounds like a really good suggestion. You could have a rock garden similar to Dirt's. I have always loved the photos of her garden.

OK, Tom, you started this board (tveguy3) and yet I don't see you posting
since 2017....didn't anybody get any Iris since then?
So how many Iris do you have to not add any more?

We used to start a new one each year, but it kind of ran it's course.

Yes, I can understand that. But then it makes me all the more curious as
a newcomer wondering how many different Iris do you have? Are you a
commercial grower with acres and acres of fabulous blooms? Or an
apartment dweller with shelves full of Iris catalogs and dreams of blooms?

Well we can always do it again(lol). Without doing an official count, This year, I believe I am slightly off balance but I was supposed to have reached the self controlled "kids stuff" level. Most insane year for me, if looking at all the years, was a whopping 175 and that was kids stuff compared to some of the fellow chatters. Now I have to feed and water all those hungry children Smiling but I still love them all and they love me back Smiling

Years ago I was a member of the local rose society. One of the members had a marvelous backyard garden and came up with a counting guide...it ended up on the old Gardenweb Forums. I have kept the guide and feel it could easily be adapted to counting iris, or any type of plant....enjoy

HOW TO COUNT ROSES -- Kim_SC at Gradenweb
1. Mini roses don't count.
2. Floribundas - because they are not full-fledged hybrid teas they count as half.
3. Shrubs, Climbers, Ramblers, Old Garden Roses, etc. don't count because they can be considered "landscaping."
4. Roses not planted or in pots don't count. (See the "Territory" Clause).
5. Roses that were discounted count as half.
6. Roses received as gifts don't count.
7. Odd numbers must always be rounded of f. If you'reout of room, round the number down. For every one-hundred, divide by two. This is known as a "stock split."
8. Roses whose names you don't know or can't remember obviously don't count.
9. Roses that are on Shovel Prune Watch don't count; the roses that replace them also don't count as they cancel each other out.
10. Duplicate/multiples count as one as they are considered a set.
11. Roses that are not planted in a bed don't count. (See the "Landscaping" Addendum).
12. Bareroots don't count because they are dormant when they arrive; once you plant them and they start to bud out; well, you've already done your count, so you will just have to wait until next season by which time you'll be sure you already counted them.
13. Mislabeled roses don't count because you probably already have one of them somewhere, which has already been counted once…probably.
14. Anything less than Grade 1 counts only a fraction, and since fractions are not whole numbers they can be rounded off (remember the rounding off rule).
15. Roses that you think you might give away can be excluded from the count. It makes it easier to part with them; if, by some chance you wind up keeping them, well…oh well.
16. HTs that get huge and wind up taking more than one space should be counted twice, but remember the duplicate rule.
17. Now. if, after counting, you have under a hundred roses, you must immediately place some orders and they don't count because they're in transit and therefore not in the ground.
18. Roses ordered on a whim really don't count because they were never on a list. (This is known as the list rule: If it's not on a list, it doesn't exist most likely).
19. If you cut many roses and give them away, this is considered Charity, and everyone knows that you get special allowances for Charity which brings us to
20. Tax Deductions (see Claiming Roses as Dependants).
See? You really didn't have as many as you thought you did time to go order some more.

Adapting this counting guide for iris.....I have 3. I rely heavily on #6, #8, #10, #11 and #13. Now I'm wondering why it takes so long to weed them. Rolling on the floor laughing

What about politicians of any nation? Aren't they the leading severe cases of nuttiness? I far more prefer irisonians infected with irisosis.... nodding . I have yet to discover how our nuttiness can become a threat to anyone... Smiling

I think I got vaccinated too early, I didn't catch a good case of Irisosis apparently
or else it was the cost of treating it that kept me down.
The nursery only had 6 of the Iris I had ordered, plus I got 2 more from a posting
from Ft. Worth Iris Society. But Thank You! Ed, now I know I don't count any of
them due to 4, 5, 12 and 18 rules.

hmmm, back when I belonged to the Rose Societies, nobody told me about
counting them with these rules and I used to hear complaints about the 183
roses I was accused of having.

Finally last week my 90 year old nursery woman sent me her last batch of bare root roses. Way too late in the season...they all arrived well leafed out and...
well it is my best batch of...
200 rose bushes that were added during this season ( Big Grin )
bringing my collection to a grand total of 550 bushes (aprox.) *Blush*

Fortunately, I don't belong to any rose society.... Crossing Fingers! Rolling my eyes.

With her second and last shipment of the season I gave my nursery lady a free hand to choose what she thought I ought to have... Whistling
So ( this is about blind trust--mutual).... she dispatched 8 bushes of 'Louisa Stone'; 8 'Winchester Cathedral'; 8 ' Tineke'; 7 'James Galway', 4 'Dapple Dawn' and quite a few more in duplicate pairs. All in all 58 bushes. And of course no payment date...whenever it suits my wallet...
Yes, these pre-modern times miracles do happen sometimes... Angel
Of course we spoke over the phone a few times and agreed about quite a few more for 2022!... *Blush*
she is starting an iris side buisiness, mainly TBI's... Green Grin!
We could keep playing this game eternally... Whistling
