This was on Pintrest. Interesting, but I will just buy some tomato plants, but just wanted to share it here.

Makes perfect sense to me. You wouldn't know what you would get if they were hybrids but they're free. I have had them "self sow" many times in the garden.

Interesting way to plant seeds--fruit and all, but I have a couple of problems with the premise.

First, "if you have old tomatoes in the fridge"...I don't put tomatoes in the fridge. It kills the flavor. (although I suppose if you bought them from the grocery as I did last week they probably don't have any flavor anyway!)

Second, as Carol says, you don't know what you're going to get. I have enough trouble finding space in my garden for the tomato varieties I want to grow that allotting some to an unknown cultivar of uncertain taste and productivity seems a waste of time. Tomato seeds are not that expensive! (But if you think they are, there are swaps available.)

I agree with Don. Why try to grow tomatoes that taste like cardboard from the grocery store. Sure the seeds would germinate but why would anyone want them to. Saving seeds from last fall is really pretty easy, buying new seeds is pretty cheap and a lot of the fun is to grow what you want. Why grow unwanted stuff (a nice way to put it) when the real thing is just as easy.

LOL it's really funny that they said "extra tomatoes in fridge" who keeps tomatoes in fridge? Definitely not someon who ever raised tomatoes from seeds.

Not a great idea!
Seeds won't germinate all that well because there are germination inhibitors in the gel surrounding the seeds. That is the reason many gardeners ferment the seeds and gel before saving the seeds.
And don't put tomatoes in refrigeration!
That is part of the reason commercial tomatoes do not have taste!

Grow some tasty heirlooms, and your time, money and energy will be rewarded.

I have to agree about the fridge. I stopped giving my former neighbor tomatoes when he told me he likes them cold with salt. Thumbs down

I agree I sure wouldn't want to grow any of the store bough tomatoes even if they did grow true!

They taste quite different when ripened on the vine.

They might not taste too bad IF they were ripened on the vine, but they are picked green, and gassed, around these parts.

Exactly. While commercial varieties in general are not the best tasting, If you grow them, the fruits are are good as many varieties. Pick any tomato green and chemicaly ripen and the taste is that of a store bought.

I agree with the fridge, not knowing what you would get, and the germination inhibitors; I also don't really see where that is much easier than just sowing some seeds in the pot...

IMO, better to take the extra tomatoes that are going to get too ripe before you can use them and put them in the freezer, in a freezer bag. Or make some stewed tomatoes. Or share them with a neighbor.

If the cost of seeds is a real issue, buy a packet of an open-pollinated type (or join a seed swap) this year, grow the plants, save some of your own seeds to grow next year -- and repeat.

I love Pinterest, but a lot of the gardening ideas there are pretty full of holes once you start to really think about them. Shrug!

I never refrigerate my tomatoes or onions, they set in a wicker basket on the kitchen counter. I heard the same thing about onions lose flavor
in the fridge, I buy small onions so I use the whole onion and have nothing that has been leftover or once sliced you would have to put in the fridge.
