This rose is supposed to be Razzle Dazzle, which looks like this:

Seems that in my case with age comes an appreciation of subtle colors and effects in roses. Once, I would have preferred Razzle Dazzle, now I think I might prefer the rose you got.

Zuzu, I think I have that rose -- a floribunda hybridized by Bill Warriner back in the '80's -- SUMMER FASHION. I love it because it's basically a photosensitive ivory flower whose petals turn more soft coral colored as the bloom ages. I don't have any pictures, but by next spring I'll try to get some -- and it looks just like your flower. It's a beautiful floribunda!

My Razzle Dazzle did the same thing (I got mine from Palatine). First set of blooms were pastels like that, but thereafter they were much brighter. Not as blinding as, say, Charisma, but still very not pastel. Now if they were a hair bit BIGGER! Mine were about an inch across... but I think that's because it's a new rose in a new home, blah blah blah.

That is a pretty one Zuzu, like the scappoled edges too, itvreminds me of Secret except your has that extra yellow flush in the center. What was the other one that we recently saw at Regans I think that also was similar to Secret? It does look a lot like the one Betty linked to. Where did this one come from? Cliff?

Yes, it did come from Cliff, which means that it could be some European rose we've never seen before.

Betty, I used to buy all of the new J&P roses as soon as the catalog came out, so Summer Fashion has been a staple in my garden for close to 25 years. I replaced several as the gophers killed each one over the years and the latest replacement is finally in a gopher cage. I love that rose. It is a possibility, but the blooms on my Summer Fashion are always smaller than these, I don't remember the petals ever being scalloped, the blooms are more "perfect" and never lax until they age, and the coral tinge also doesn't appear until they age, as you pointed out. The bloom in the photo isn't aging. It opened up looking like this.

Toni, you may be right about the first flush being deceptive. Maybe this will turn out to be Razzle Dazzle and display more orange as it settles in. I'm wondering about yours, however. Razzle Dazzle and some of Fryer's other floribundas are known to have blooms that are larger than average. The bloom in this photo is about 4 inches in diameter.

Stay tuned for the second flush and either the solution or another round of guesses.

I'd be surprise if she turned out to be Razzle Dazzle as the form of te bloom seems quite different.

I've gotten used to the first flush of blooms to be almost 100% wrong, especially w/the wacky weather we have here. The largest bloom I've gotten off my Razzle Dazzle couldn't have been more than 2" across.. tiny little things like Charisma. In fact, when I first saw the bloom, I was wondering why my Charisma was blooming so light colored blooms! Very few of my roses give me "normal" blooms their first year.. Dolly Parton, her first year, gave me only like 3 blooms and they were puny little things, no more than 3" across. This was the first year she's actually given me REAL blooms.. (ie: 4"+). I think it has to do with my winter & watering.. if it's too dry (like it's been this year), then they do bloom, but it's just not enough. Next year, since I won't be doing too too much planting in the front, will be heavily fed/watered (if necessary), that should help a lot. Natasha Monet bloomed once.. pure white. HoneySweet bloomed once, a pathetic 2" blossom that had almost no smell and was a soft pink rather than the coral/orange/pink. I'm kinda used to it.

It is not uncommon for roses planted in my garden not to bloom at all their first year. And not to bloom if they've had any setbacks within the last year. Similarly, flowers might be unusually small in these cases.

Roses that are white in color or a simple pink will frequently bloom the same color time after time, but if the rose is a complex color that depends on two pigments, or if it descends from roses such as mutabilis whose pigments change through the development of the flower, I find that all sorts of things can happen to the colors. Temperature, soil moisture, and feeding can all affect color.

Steve - True that. My Oranges & Lemons, this spring, was definitely more Lemons than Oranges.. but as soon as summer it, was definitely Oranges and no Lemons. Now that it's cooler, it's finally Oranges AND Lemons. In fact, my Escapade, which usually blooms a soft pastel pink has been throwing some almost hot pink flowers this late in the season.. almost as bright as Hot Princess.
