Esperanza said:I have a weeping mulberry and the roots look just like those. I also have poke berry. It is raining now but I will get some pics when it stops.

I'd love to see some pics of that! Smiling

I can dig up one from here tomorrow for comparison. I think the flowers and berries and the stems left after the berries are gone are absolutely georgeous! They volunteer here but mostly in the wrong spot. I tip my hat to you.

I believe that the weeping Mulberry tree is made from a dwarfed weeping cultivar for the top grafted to the root section of a regular white Mulberry.

Oh, I just had another thought. The older, bigger stems of Phytolacca americana have this very noticeable chambered pith. If you split the older stems longitudinally then you can see the odd pith.

I've not dealt with Mulberry before so I don't know about the pith style on that plant. Shrug!

Old stem with deteriorating pith.

Link to a photo of a fresh stem on a google search. I wasn't sure about the safety of the website.

Here is a pick of my mulberry roots. I do not recommend this tree. It was given to me and seeds itself everywhere. All the roots need to be removed when you cut them down or they come back. The berries are tasty though. I could not get a picture of the poke. We have had a lot of rain the past few days and the pasture they are growing in is a muddy mess.

Slightly off-topic suggestion...that photo of the Mulberry roots as well as the comment you just made should become part of the ATP database. The photo is excellent and the comment may prevent others from needless suffering. Thumbs up

I don't know if it's because it's wet, but It looked like some kind of weird looking alien to me at first. Great pic! Thumbs up

It is funny you say that. I was trimming back some things I had planted around it one time and jumped back because the roots I had just uncovered were orange and alien looking to me. Hilarious! I had a good laugh at myself for being briefly frightened by roots. But because that happened I knew where I could get a good shot of the tree roots to post here.

DaisyI said:I was going to suggest letting one grow - those aren't carrot leaves. My thought was burdock but Phytolacca americana - Pokeweed or poke salad - is also a possibility.

Just because its called poke salad doesn't mean you should eat it. Unless you know what you are doing, you will poison yourself

Let one grow - you will have an answer in a week or two.

Daisy

I let it grow out some. Here's a photo:

So, is it pokeweed?
