The only thing I would change about Mordor is that the standards start to spread out as the bloom ages a bit. I just got it last year, so maybe next year there will be some extras.

The stem on our plant of Mordor was rather short, however it could be our strange season. It certainly stands out because of the beards.

This Iris .. Gold digger .. is the first to bloom in my Garden ..April 1, 2016 -
It has not in the 3 yrs here bloomed in May -- plus it has 'wandered a bit' from where the original was.. boy, these things keep you in the dirt figuring out what is going on !
But, welcome to this ray of Gold !
Live like every day as it is your last because one day -- it will be.
(if I can find who said this, I'll credit that dear Soul -- wasn't me, but it makes a lot of sense)

Could you explain a bit more, what is an intermediate? Is it the size or time of the bloom season? I hate to sound so silly but I really don't know.

Well, I don't have all of the statistics about MDB's, SDB's, Intermediates, Border Bearded and Tall Bearded memorized, but they are all different height catagories.

Ok, I am fairly new to iris growing. I have had a few TBs for years but that is all. I am adding a few L. Iris and Japanese, and a Siberian too this year.

So the bloom on all of those are bearded correct? This is a dangerous place to be for a plant junkie.

Teresa, I would suggest starting with a book about Irises or bearded irises. There are several and you can always check them out at the library. It will explain so much that you really need to know before you invest a lot of time, energy and funds into the plant. I would get at least two different books and read them from cover to cover. They will cover all classes of bearded irises and even have the history of the iris along with how to propagate them. It is interesting reading.

Not correct. Louisiana, Japanese and Siberian iris are all beardless iris. There other beardless iris as well. Spuria iris is another example.

Some common iris that are bearded often use 'bearded' as part of the name description such as 'TB' for 'tall bearded', 'SDB' for 'standard dwarf bearded', 'BB' for 'border bearded'. These are multi-generation hybrids derived from bearded species. Both aril species are bearded, as are the 'arilbred' iris which are hybrids derived using the aril species with other bearded species.

Iris as a plant group is really large. The ones mentioned are just among the more commonly grown types.

SDB'S are easiest for me to care for. TB's need staking and fussing. WEe have a lot of wind here on the hill.
None of my iris are really great this year.Winter was mild and spring was colder than normal. I don't see many increases.
