Honorable Lord, Hysteria & a couple others look like they have nice spacing between the flowers. The pictures of many of the others look crowded on the stem. While the colors are wonderful, if everything is open at once, it will be a short bloom season. Can anyone comment how some of them bloom in their garden?

Lucy if there is a rebloomer in there then it bunches for me, but first bloom NOT, maybe three open at once for even spacing but not a problem, you must have a lot of problems with the TB not just from space.

When we in this area see that much bunching, we wonder. Quick bloom & then nothing is not what we want in the garden. Were the photos from rebloom stalks? It didn't say. I was wondering about the jamming on so many. Mentioned 2 which seemed more sensible flowering although there were others.

It's not uncommon for Blyth iris in my garden to exhibit "tight" branching. Not all, or even most, of his varieties do it, but enough of them do that it is a noticeable trend. It doesn't seem like he considers tight branching to be a serious flaw. Or maybe the plants don't exhibit that trait in the ideal conditions of his own beds? Who knows. Shrug!

As far as bloom season goes, some of his varieties have long bloom times, some don't. I don't really notice any pattern there compared to other hybridizers. Enjoy The Party, for example, has branching that I consider to be a bit too close, but it's one of the first to bloom in my garden every year and will still be blooming late into the season.

In the 2011-2012 Tempo Two catalog he has short descriptions and frequently mentions branching....interesting. We have some good shows here and I like to compete so branching is important to me.

The three I've noticed in my garden that have blooms bunched together a bit too much for my taste are:

But I'm not interested in exhibition stalks, just beautiful flowers, so it's OK with me. I didn't know about show stalks until I went to the TBIS meeting in Salem a couple of years ago, and at Keith Keppel's someone told me he didn't care for the spacing on the stalks of some of the Blyth varieties for that reason; so now it's something I notice. The guys at Mid-America often put "Show stalks!" in their descriptions for the exhibitors, which I think is helpful.

Mary Ann those are really nice pictures I really like the beards they look like they are glowing on it.

Lucy none of these pictures were re bloomers they were all taken this spring at my home or in Oregon at the end of May. I do have 2 of his that just bloomed last month but I think they are confused because of the different seasons, I just got them from him in April. I certaintly don't remember any of his flowers blooming heavy and fading fast if that is what you were wondering, they have actually been the opposite for me they seem to with stand the hard rain and straight line winds so much better than the older varities with open standards which is important to me because of our storms we always get in the spring will wreak havoc on the older ones.

My opinion on his flowers is that they are wonderfully unique, the color combinations are the most important to me, I buy strictly for the flower, some of my favorites have only 6 buds on them and the branching is tight but the flower itself is beautiful and I will always buy something that is different and unique over the same old color combos with a different name on them, I want to see something out of the ordinary and his is that, and next would be if the plant grows well and increases and his have way exceeded my expectations, I am usually happy if the plant doubles in a years time and some of the ones he sent me have 5 good sized increases on them since April. Every major grower that I visited on the west coast was crossing his plants with there own and hoping something like the ones above are in the seedling patch. Smiling I think more buds and branching would be great but none of those guys would throw any of the ones above away.

I would be delighted to grow any of them but I do like iris with sufficient branching that the blossoms can open fully without crowding another flower or the stem. His color patterns, ruffling, width of falls....everything are cutting edge. I'll be getting some next year.

Really nice Brad, I planted Rogue Trader last year, but it hasn't bloomed yet, can't wait. I planted Enter The Dragon this year, got it as a gift in my Keppel order. Sweet Svengali and Beach Dance have got to go on my wish list. One I really would like to see, and have is Samarkand Road, I don't find it anywhere here in America, I may have to have it imported. Love the pics in the catalog though.

I really like that FULL OF MAGIC. Maybe I should try to find it... The two I really want now but can't seem to find are TRULY WICKED and OXFORD COUNTESS. I really love those two but my rhizomes have pretty much dwindled down to nothing now. Maybe I should pot them up to see if I can get the rhizomes to increase in size -- hmmm...

I have learned through experience with the Blyth irises that if I see something I really want I need to jump on it, because even two years later it might be almost impossible to find. There are quite a few that I was considering getting that have now all but disappeared!

Dee, you have quite a list of them now -- I'll have to peruse it some more!!!

Didn't Dee have a big list in this thread of all the Blyth irises she has? Am I going crazy? Who am I?
