Had lots of Butterflies in the garden today and this one Moth that I can't find ID for other than Pyrausta sanguinalis (Linnaeus, 1767) but they don't exist here as far as I know. Any one know this magenta and tan one? Edit: I think I found the proper ID.

Elation and Sadness yesterday... Sighing! Sighing!

I was elated cause I saw for the first time on my property, a swallowtail (I think it was Eastern). Caught a glimpse of it as I was looking toward my greenhouse. Got closer and yes - it was a Swallowtail. Ran in to get camera and tell DW.

As I got closer, I thought it was on the wall of the GH. Nope. Crying

It had somehow got trapped between the layers of film (2 layers of 4 mil plastic) on my GH wall. As I got closer, I could see it was completely stationary. Then I realized -- problem. It was dead. Crying Crying Grumbling Grumbling

I gently removed it with some effort to see if it was in fact dead. Yep. It was freaking hot here then ~ 92 degrees outside, so that area of the GH had to be well above 100 + and I figure the poor little guy died of the heat and/or was asphiziated.

Darn it! Sighing! So I gently layed him to rest.

A short time later though, I actually saw another of the same species land for a few seconds on one of my rose bushes bloom. It only stayed for like 3 seconds. Of course I had no camera.

And then off he went!

Since I know nothing about Swallotails, I have no idea what attracted them to my property. In particular why the one went in to the GH. This is my 3rd season with it and I have never seen a larger butterfly inside. A few teeny ones - mostly moths.

At least I can look forward to the hope of see one again.

Aw how sad David. At least since you saw another then you can figure they are around somewhere.

Kurt those are stunning photos of the Tiger Swallowtail! Agastache! Got my first ones last fall & they went dormant for the winter of course. Since they began blooming this spring I have fallen in love with them. Tough plants & every pollinator under the sun seems to be drawn to them. I have a bumble bee that I swear has literally camped out on it! Hilarious!

What a shame, David. Did you take a picture of the dead one? I know that's morbid of me, but it's really hard to get pictures of them when they're alive. Trust me, I've been chasing one around my yard here for weeks, and he barely stops then flies off at warp speed again.

Yes, I wish we could grow oranges and lemons here, it gets to cold for them. In South Texas they can grow citrus but not here.
I have read that in some places they call them orange dogs, because they find them on orange trees a lot.
I suppose they don't understand their purpose, or they don't know what they become.
Here in North Central Texas we raise them om Hercule's Club tree and Hop tree, both of the citrus family as well. Smiling

I like growing citrus but they're in pots and need to be protected over winter - which means I have to move them.
