So there are some roots starting. What do I do next? Can I plant it now? How?

Thanks!

You can carefully remove the rooted shoots (slips) and plant them, and let the tuber continue to nurture some more shoots.

Are you growing a pet or are you trying to start new plants? I have a pet Japanese purple sweet potato that has been the parent of many new plants. The cuttings root instantly in water. If a pet, plant that puppy - I always plant in soil (not water) but you can plant it now and it will do fine.

When potting something that has been rooted in water, hold the plant over the pot at the right level and CAREFULLY put soil around the roots.

Good luck,

Daisy

Looks like there are 2 shoots on your potato - I would slice them apart and plant both of them.

I've always taken the shoots off and rooted them in water and then planted; Daisy, do you plant the whole sweet potato in the dirt?

Not necessary to plant whole potato in the dirt- each shoot is a new plant all on its own. Leaving the potato in the water gets you new slips as well. If growing in the water, many leave the potato attached to the 'slips' ( is actually what they are called.)

Black specks are USUALLY scat- from bugs. It can also be dirt carried from the roof overhead- since I see it hanging. Is it on every leaf? Any chewed leaves? Any eggs on the underside of the leaves?

It only happens on the old leaves and no sign of bugs. I tried spraying with my usual remedy (alcohol) and all it did was kill the leaf. Smiling

Are you growing this ornamentally or for the potatoes?

No, I grew it to see what color a Japanese sweet potato plant was (I was hoping it would be pruple). Its in a hanging basket in my greenhouse. It might be growing more potatoes though.

Who is SongofJoy?

Oops! *Blush*

I asked that question back in the beginning and I wasn't sure I understood the answer but got the feeling it was going to be an ornamental.

We shall be lost and assumptive together! :+)

If ornamental, one can keep taking cuttings off of that mama potato as they grow from it. It will keep growing more until it becomes ill or finally runs out of energy. If desired, the whole potato can be put in soil, with or without any foliage at the time. Cuttings take off most easily for me if given 2-4 days in water for roots to start to form, then put in pot or ground. I had it coming out of so many hanging porch pots a few summers ago, it was like sitting behind a curtain of foliage.

Produce-section potatoes (where there's just 1 kind available) are almost surely going to make plain/medium green leaves. For more interesting leaves, one can look for a store with more varieties of potatoes for sale, which may or may not have more unusual foliage. But since they're so inexpensive when sold as ornamental annuals, I prefer to buy already growing plants. The leaf appearance is a known quantity that way, for very little difference in price.

Those that are sensitive to getting a rash from latex sap should be careful when "playing with" sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas,) or any other Ipomoeas (morning glory, moonflower vine, cardinal creeper, so many nicknames for so many diff Ipomoeas...) to avoid contact with the sap &/or wash as soon as possible after contact. Ipomoeas have latex sap also.
The golden rule: Do to others only that which you would have done to you.

In the ground because you expect little 'taters? Or because its pretty? Either way, you will have little 'taters because that is the nature of potatoes. My daughter had one that was rotting so she threw it into a 5-gallon bucket on a couple inches of dirt. As the stem grew, she added dirt. The plant never really took off but.... when she gave up and dumped the bucket into the compost, she discovered she had 7 pretty good sized potatoes!

Go figure!

I hope it works for you, Reid -- the only time I tried growing sweet potatoes we had a very cool and rainy summer and they didn't produce anything usable... Maybe La Nina will work in your favor this summer Thumbs up

You did inspire me to stick one that I had sitting around a little too long into a glass of water to grow the vines for an ornamental plant. And, of note, the leaves and vines are edible, too Smiling
