I made the mistake of not paying attention to my surroundings and only found it after it moved. I was readjusting the statue in the picture and thank God, he was where he was (as pictured) because his butt end was on the side I was messing with. ::wipes sweat from forehead::
I have a friend who lives in Alabama who breeds dogs. There are many times the dogs have been bitten by copperheads.

Well, thankfully copperheads are the least potent of the poisonous snakes. She's been breeding dogs for many, many, many years. One of them did not make it. The others have gotten sick but made it. I think the dogs have killed the snake at all but once. The dogs are border Terriers. They are tough!

That is what I read, fortunately. Of the six Georiga gets, they are the least toxic (so I've read). But, more people here get bit by them then the other venomous snakes. They say it's due to their camouflage (evident in my picture, apparently).
Yes, the camoflage absolutely but besides that, I think they just plain have nasty dispositions so are quite rapid to bite.
Gotta be careful where you stick your hands!

We have seen copperheads on our rural property. Neighbor said he's been bitten. So when we go down there, I no longer let my 10# rat terrier (my avatar) Button run loose (foolish me did let her do so the first year we owned the place). She's on leash at all times now. We recently acquired a resident fox that has dug a den underneath our cabins front steps. The gophers and moles have disappeared in the last month or so. We're hoping either the fox or the hawks will finally rid us of the copperheads.
Good idea to keep Button on a leash anyway since she's a terrier Peggy. (She's adorable) One of my best friends lives in AL & breeds border terriers (which is what I have) -- her place is prone to copperheads & the dogs get bitten from time to time even being in the enclosed "dog yard". 95% of the time they survive but it certainly isn't fun or easy & then there's always that chance of the awful outcome.

You're right, terriers are fearless, and Button is getting old at 16, and less observant than she once was, deaf, too, so she would never hear it slithering near her. She's so deaf she doesn't hear us almost screaming at her now. We have to get eye contact and use hand signals to call her.
