Tonight, I thought Mrs. Rac was alone..as this was the only one going around at ground level. I guess it was disappointed there was no refill in the catfood tray, so went searching around the area.

Ah..then I looked up, there's the other one walking on the fence:

They know you've been putting food out at night. These guys are smart and crafty. If they can find a way into your house they'll get in. Stop the night time feeding and see if they go away. Seriously Tarev, you don't want them in your house-they are very destructive. My pair left after we took the food away at night. Thank goodness.

I've come a long way from having a paralyzing general phobia on a ridiculous level about any spider, to appreciating some of them. Gardening has been the vehicle for that mental healing.

These little jumpers are sooo smart and attentive! They seem as curious about me as I am about them, and so few of them show any fear. They have earned my admiration and this kind of spider no longer scares me at all.

Smart, attentiveโ€ฆand aggressive. Those things are hilarious the way they jump at you. We're like giants compared to them, and they still try to take us down. Hilarious! It's like my dog. He's a small terrier and yet he thinks he can take on German Shepards.

Did you know that black widows are closely related to jumping spiders? So glad they don't jump, though.

A lot of activity right in front of my livingroom window today. There is a cardinal pair setting up house somewhere nearby. We see them daily lately:

plantmanager said: I don't know, Carol. We have a 25 lb dog and that animal is larger than he is. Most domestic cats aren't that large.

Sounds about the size of a lynx or young bobcat. Have you got any such critters in Florida? Wouldn't think lynx would be that far south, but bobcats sure could.

EDIT: OMG, I just realized your critter photo was from 2018. Sorry I got careless and didn't notice until after I hit the enter key.

Oh, the love-hate relationship I have with squirrels. They're just too darn cute to not like watching them and capturing those cute little faces in my camera lens. Smiling But, Oh, when they dig up my ranunculus bulbs and expose the roots in my potted plants.........grrrrrrrr.

Peggy, you can use toothpicks, skewers with points facing up, forks with the tines sticking up, pine cones, anything that makes it too uncomfortable for squirrels to get into the pot.

Fieldsof_flowers said: Oh my goodness, raccoons are adorable! Lovey dubby As well as possums (though some people like to disagree Hilarious! ) the only problem is that possums and raccoons I believe have rabies. Other than that, I'd love them visiting. nodding

Rabies is almost nonexistent in opossums due to their low body temperature. Rabies virus likes it warm!

A further word about rabies. Stats reported by agencies and media are often not carefully worded...and they should be. Raccoon rabies is the most predominant variant. However, other mammals can carry that variant. Raccoons are among the group of several mammals with a larger number of cases. However, it should be noted that these are confirmed cases where animals were turned over for analysis. Most animals turned over for analysis are sick...not necessarily with rabies but there is a reason they are assessed. Assessment requires the death of an animal if not dead already. Anyway, the small subset of an animal population should not be used to assess the total population. The results have already been skewed to animals in contact with people or domestic animals, those which are sick, dead, or acting strangely. Out of that small subset, THEN you can apply the stats that normally get reported. So an animal with say, 5% positive rate from testing is not anything close to 5% of the population. I'm not downplaying the risk of rabies, but I do want to stress that the unknowing misinterpretation of stats in some info pathways can lead to overreactions and misrepresentation.

I have several raccoons and opossums in the yard every night. My main concern is doing poo patrol every morning and removing all sources of fecal pathogens...from the feral cats as well if not even more so. Fleas...and by association...worms are my main concern. Luckily, there are ways to keep this at bay.

Ultimately, we've made the decision to live with animals. For us, they complete the sanctuary. Living with animals also means cleaning up after them and the potential for repairing damage to plants/plantings. A couple of years ago I was aghast at the amount of destruction a group of three sibling raccoons were doing. Even when Mom was with them, they created damage. It only made sense once I watched them for long periods. They LOVED wrestling...almost as much as food. They didn't squander opportunities for play. They sometimes reminded me of kato jumping Inspector Clousseau at any given moment. And there were times when it was just a dog pile/free-for-all. I have just decided planting extra and keeping some seeds back for repairs is worth the circus. It's not the same without all the animals.
