hi all,
this was not the first thread on the iris forum i jumped into. so, i wondered how you all seemingly knew each other 'til i stumbled upon this roll call.
my name is daphne, i am not an addict (lol), i do have an addict's personality. an example, i stay up until 3 a.m. because i'll just finish another row of lace knitting (so i think) and when i look up again, i've finished 20 more rows, and it s 3:00 o'clock. so i know i can become an iris addict, too.
i'm a watercolorist, do a lotta reading (in my former life i was in the classroom and in the library), love gardening, still sew clothing and quilts, i love to eat, designed jewelry, collected antique japanese baskets, and porcelains.
we moved from los altos, ca (in the bay area )where we lived for 40 +yr., to s. ca. to be closer to our only child and 2 g'sons. the mindset and culture in socal is very different from norcal. it's as tho' i'm in another country or state. i haven't found anyone who really loves gardening in my neighborhood and last yr. our daughter moved her whole family to florida, including husband & dog. we've been thinking of moving back to the b.a., but the task is too daunting at thie season of our lives. daughter was offered a position w/vistacon that was difficult to turn down.
have lived here in san diego county for 11 yr., and didn'think i could grow irises because of the descriptive max. zone 9.
a friend who planned a visit with us, ( from santa cruz, ca)asked me if i'd like to have a few of her irises, and i said, "sure.". she's a master gardener in her area and suggested i try some. ("some" is the operative word)
after all, i had at least 60 or 70 cultivars in the b.a. she sent me a link to the n.g.a plant data base for irises 3 wk. ago to choose which irises i wanted from her list. (and it was curtains for me.) i've been hooked on this site since then. (i keep saying not an addict). in a very short time (of 2 wks) i have 18 irises and @ least 6 more on their way. but, i have no space for them. so into pots they go for now, till i can figure out which tropicals to clear away. (the irises may not survive the heat N drought of the area)
my hubby of 50 yr. is shaking his head asking, "what're you up to, and what are you buying now?"
my four legged other child is just hPpy i'm happy
this is "mia" our 6th silky terrier o're the years,
oh, and i love to knit lace sweaters.
so for now 'nomoirises'. see, i'm not addicted.
thank you for the warm welcome and sage advice to my questions.
