Hi Patrick! I used to have something near 18 Clematis vines too, but my dogs serially peed on them until they killed each one in the back yard. Now left with a mere 3, the ones outside the fence. Literally, they went by the plant one after another. When it was dead, they began with a new one. It was horrible.

Bonnie has a valid point. *Welcomes* are generally reserved for new members. For established members, a *hi* or *thanks for sharing* would be more appropriate.

And for those of you who are new enough not to know -- that's why Dave has gone to the trouble of adding the *New Member* designation -- to give you a clue.

Betsy -- thank you for advising us on who is welcome (and therefore, who is not). Quite frankly, I'm beginning to tire of your lectures.

Patrick -- your pups are adorable. Smiling

hi all,
this was not the first thread on the iris forum i jumped into. so, i wondered how you all seemingly knew each other 'til i stumbled upon this roll call.

my name is daphne, i am not an addict (lol), i do have an addict's personality. an example, i stay up until 3 a.m. because i'll just finish another row of lace knitting (so i think) and when i look up again, i've finished 20 more rows, and it s 3:00 o'clock. so i know i can become an iris addict, too.

i'm a watercolorist, do a lotta reading (in my former life i was in the classroom and in the library), love gardening, still sew clothing and quilts, i love to eat, designed jewelry, collected antique japanese baskets, and porcelains.

we moved from los altos, ca (in the bay area )where we lived for 40 +yr., to s. ca. to be closer to our only child and 2 g'sons. the mindset and culture in socal is very different from norcal. it's as tho' i'm in another country or state. i haven't found anyone who really loves gardening in my neighborhood and last yr. our daughter moved her whole family to florida, including husband & dog. we've been thinking of moving back to the b.a., but the task is too daunting at thie season of our lives. daughter was offered a position w/vistacon that was difficult to turn down.

have lived here in san diego county for 11 yr., and didn'think i could grow irises because of the descriptive max. zone 9.

a friend who planned a visit with us, ( from santa cruz, ca)asked me if i'd like to have a few of her irises, and i said, "sure.". she's a master gardener in her area and suggested i try some. ("some" is the operative word)

after all, i had at least 60 or 70 cultivars in the b.a. she sent me a link to the n.g.a plant data base for irises 3 wk. ago to choose which irises i wanted from her list. (and it was curtains for me.) i've been hooked on this site since then. (i keep saying not an addict). in a very short time (of 2 wks) i have 18 irises and @ least 6 more on their way. but, i have no space for them. so into pots they go for now, till i can figure out which tropicals to clear away. (the irises may not survive the heat N drought of the area)

my hubby of 50 yr. is shaking his head asking, "what're you up to, and what are you buying now?"
my four legged other child is just hPpy i'm happy

Hi Daphne. Thanks for sharing your story/history with us. I used to be an avid knitter -- for many years, knitted garments used to be my entire winter wardrobe. I never knitted a pair of pants, though -- but then, back in the day, women didn't wear pants anyway. But I knitted knitted sweaters, skirts, dresses, etc. -- and I crocheted vests to match the skirts. Smiling One year I knitted seven alpine sweaters for Christmas gifts, started them the day after Thanksgiving!! Blinking The needles did fly!

I've knitted several sweaters that were *lacy* -- but I'm not sure what you mean when you say "lace knitting". Got a picture to share?

That's a shame that your daughter moved, after you moved to be near her. One of life's little ironies, eh? Do you think that one day she and her family will be back to your area?

Mia is adorable! Many of us here on the forums have dogs -- even though they smell bad and make the house smell bad. Hmmmmm -- mine doesn't. How did that happen??? Big Grin Here is a picture of my Panda:
Thumb of 2016-08-15/Muddymitts/d59e7a
She is a Peek-a-Poo -- which is a cross between a Pekingese and Poodle. Because she is black and white, I call her my Pinto Peek-a-Poo! She's my second dog of this cross. I love these little dogs -- they are smart, playful and affectionate. If I'm sitting down, Panda is right next to me -- a *contact puppy* for sure! Lovey dubby

You must love Silkies, to have had six of them in your life. Smiling

I don't think you'll have trouble growing Irises. Heat and drought don't seem to bother them. Excessive moisture seems to be their worst enemy, as a lot of us have learned the hard way this year. Sad I hope you'll keep us posted on your journey with your new (ahem) interest!! Whistling

Hi Daphne,
Mia is so cute. I have a special spot in my heart for terriers. My husband is through the chuckling phase about my iris love. He is becoming more interested and has been designated the official rototiller Rolling on the floor laughing
