Well, we have a bit of a wait ahead for our latest grandchild. April 13 is the due date. The irises should be looking good by then too!

I dug up this old tread from few years back where we introduced ourselves. Now that the bloom season is winding down for most of us, I thought it might be fun for new members to meet older members (Not necessarily older in age, but longer time as a member) , and give you a chance to introduce yourselves to us. Hi Tom. Took a short break, from fixin dinner.. I guess you may consider me a newer member, here at NGA, although I've been on other garden websites, over the many years, I've been gardening. Some member's names are actually familiar, to me. & I'm talking about , from a very lonnng time ago ! I was just curious, why such an old Post, would suddenly appear ? haha You got me !

Joined in December of just last year & after so many improvements have been made, with bearded Iris, by so many of those "hybridizers", recently, I just couldn't "hep" it ! Then, wanted seeds, to start some too & got carried away , by that & next thing I knew, was getting started , all over again,...Since I'd started growing Iris, in the 1980's, in "mixed' borders", but enjoy tall bearded & like to start species from seeds & next, will be rhizomes arriving this summer,, for attempting future crosses of my own.

Already looking forward, to flowers by next spring, if I manage to pull it off, just right. Enjoy everyone's individual personality on forum & think it's been grrreat fun, sharing an interest in them, with long time members, too.
Lovin' it here next to the Chesapeake Bay, on a peninsula, of southernmost end of it, which tends to usually make the climate, fairly mild, year 'round. This City, is so old, some areas were colonized, over 400 years ago. I wonder if any had brought any Iris, along with them, as the voyage may have lasted up to four months ! That's what the 'Fleur de Lis' symbol is about , as old stylized Iris, isn't it ?

The Fleur de Lis is considered to be an iris, but it also became the symbol of France a very long time ago, so in older eastern towns of the United States it has more to do with the French than the iris. The french traders were here before British colonization.

Yes, Leslie. I'm partly of French ancestral origins, dating back, over a Millennium ! It appears that King Louis 1 (Latin, was "Clovis", for Louis...) & since the symbol, appeared in use that early, may have actually originated from the Holy Land & Kings of Israel. As about a dozen Iris species, are native to Israel.

Though, my line seems to connect to shared common ancestry, with Loius XIV., & confirmed by DNA. matching. I've come up with some actual surnames, such as Beauchamp, ( identical twin, brother - - using French surname, of d' Abitot) & apparently may have actually traded places, with one another , & Beauchamp ( not a pretty story in Medieval times) as having returned to France for as long as seven years period of time. Another, Ashby de la Zouche ..plus a few more...It started with a 400 year old English Penny, DNA test results & doing research...

Seems to affect my likes in roses, too, from "House", I've descended from, also.
Apparently, the symbolic use ( in my mind) may have been started, being used, much earlier, in Israel, where Oncocyclus originated in Israel & Syria & possibly associated with Holy Trinity, in the symbolism,, & "explanation,'"was as being by divine gift, as reason for a King there & transferred from French & Spanish use, to England.. Though. I do not know, if "Consider the Lilies of the field, for they toil not." wasn't more so, much to do about Iris,, than any Lily !

Here I am, about half a century ago. Hanging out, pool side, not far from Pearl Harbor, at an Officer's Club. Oops, guess I got caught, skipping school, once again ! This photo came out blurry, but original, isn't . So much, for modern technology...My eyes are brown, here, but it wasn't the first time, they'd changed colors on me.

Good "catch", Arlyn ! It won't be too long & summer will be just a memory, so we'd better get busy, with getting our orders in for Iris ! I've got to get some perlite, for starting off some of those seeds, I'm trying to germinate. While others are tending their's too & likely have been cutting back stalks, & will soon be collecting their seeds too & starting the process, all over again. If not, busy ordering away, those rhizomes !
I've been a a "commercial" fishing vessel before, off the Atlantic Coast..& could tell quite a few stories myself, about those adventures. Though no photos, unfortunately..
