Keep an eye out at your local Lowe's store, Mike. They've had some nice Vandas (and some really lousy ones) for around $25 but if you can catch them marking the plants down after they finish blooming, you can get them for half price.

Other than that we have a "local" place we meet at once or twice a year in Apopka, FL that sells tons of Vandas for $12 but not in bloom.

If you get them at a show or from a grower they'll be $40 minimum for a blooming size one, from what I've seen lately. Starts that you can order online are tiny and will take you years to ever see a flower.

But if you want to order some small starts like that Motes Orchids is the most reasonable I've seen. http://www.motesorchids.com/

Carter and Holmes has a few too, but again very small and not cheap. Maybe they'd give you a deal if you visit there any time soon for supplies.

and Mike...as a former Vanda owner..( and I live in Florida) unless you have a greenhouse these guys are pretty sensitive to cold...need lots of light and water....everyday...they are truly high maintenance plants. My suggestion is to spend your dollars elsewhere!

I have always grown Vandas from the beginning of my obsession (?) with Orchids and I love them, but I also like the 'mini Vandas' very much.
Look for Darwinaras or as they are now called Vandachostylis. They look like Vandas, but a bunch of them will fit on a windowsill. Also Neostylis are in this grouping, like Neostylis Lou Sneary etc. Many of these pretty little gems have Neofinetia falcata in their parentage and happily many bloom several times a year. Ascofinetias are another group. ( most vendors still use old names). Also Renanetias, like Renanetia Sunrise.
I just posted the Dar. Walnut Valley today into the monthly thread.

Mike, I only have the two large Vanda and have had those two for 8 years. I don't pamper my two at all. They get watered and fertilized when all my other (mostly Cattleya Alliance) orchids do. Last year both of them bloomed three times, resting in the fall/winter. They are both in bloom now.

I don't plan on growing any other Vanda though. Every year I tell myself I should sell the two I have. They simply take up too much room in my greenhouse (now they go into my solarium). Thus it is a space issue with me. I try to never expose those Vanda to temperatures below 60F, but both got numerous early mornings in the mid to lower 50's this spring and it did not seem to bother then at all. Of course, mature plants seem to take a lot more "neglect" than seedlings do.

The mini-Vandas that Ursula mentioned do really well for me and take up little space. I would start with them.

Thank you again everyone. I will probably start with the minis..I have two Neofinetia falcata. The are both tagged with Neo, falcata, but they both have two different looking leaves. One has bloomed for me and was a really nice looking flower and smelled wonderful and the other has yet to bloom. I really like mini orchids and a few large ones. Oh who I am I kidding, I like them all...lol.

Well, went over and looked at Motes. They have some mini vanadas at a good price. The only thing I don't like is the shipping and handling fee of $12..ugh! Could not find any of the vanadas on Ebay.

Aww, Ken, it takes time. In the meantime I bet your local Walgreens still has some of those red noses left. Check it out.

My wife, Kathy, said she would buy be a pig nose. She said it was large enough to fit over all the bandaging. She is so sympathetic. Whistling
