Here are the two I picked up at the show Sunday.
Ascda. Kultaria Gems and Den. Green Lantern....assuming the tags are correct

Yes, Carol, that Den is great. Love it.

When I arrived home from our orchid meeting, I went to work on the downed Jacaranda limbs. I cut them into manageable pieces and made a pile in my circular drive. Then I found a neighbor kid and gave him $50 to haul it away. Here is the pile:

Now back to our meeting. My Rhynchovola Fairy Queen won the Judges Choice Award.
Thumb of 2016-09-28/hawkarica/db56d3 Thumb of 2016-09-28/hawkarica/edcd91

And the Bratonia [Brat.] Charles M. Fitch tied for the Members Choice Award.

As Lindsey pointed out, our speaker was all about Vandas and they had several for sale. Two of them came home with me. The first is (V. Doctor Anek X V. Simiran). I think these are Apopka plants that they have bloomed and then sell for twice what they paid for them. That is still reasonable and I handed over $25 for the plant.

The second is the same as Lindsey miniature, The tag reads Ascda. Weerapan which is incorrect. I know it is now a Vanda but I can't find Weerapan in OrchidWiz. Any suggestions, Ursula, Melissa, anyone?

Jim, mine did not have a tag on it..so I emailed Donna at Goodwin Orchids..she confirmed it was ( formally known as...) Ascocenda Weerapan..

That sure is a pile of debris in your driveway...what a mess!

Jim, I immediately looked up the Weerapan and realized it wasn't registered with the RHS as such. But there is a Vanda Weeravan?

Lindsey, Weerapan is not a registered orchid name. Thus the problem.

Weeravan has 37.5 % curvifolium! Looking at the really pretty color, that is what I thought first: this one has a lot of curvifolium in it. So perhaps Weeravan might be the correct name?

Yes, you found it, Ursula. I spent a half hour playing with the letters but never got a hit. Thanks!

Lindsey, your new orchid is Vanda Weeravan (Vanda Pukele x Vanda Eileen Beauty). Now I can go to bed.

Lindsay, I think Donna Goodwin is a good person and has no clue she has the name of that orchid wrong. Why don't you contact her again and let her know?

Wonderful, now you name sleuths have found the right name, I can look for one when I go to Apopka. I love the color and the nice small size, too.

Hope those lost limbs didn't mis-shape your beautiful Jacaranda tree too much, Jim. Maybe it was due for a thinning anyway? They are known to be weak trees and it may have added a lot of weaker growth with the two very wet summers we've had. We had a 3-trunked specimen here when we bought the house that had one trunk leaning over where I am currently sitting, inside our dining area. Needless to say we had to have it removed, tree guys, crane and the whole nine yards.

Love those Vandas, Jim! Sorry about your Jacranda, but they are prone to wind damage. Just be glad it wasn't close to the house. While you were searching for the name of your Vanda, did you by any chance see V. Kultaria Gems?

It is surely Kultana Gems?

Kultaria Gems is not registered, Kultana Gems is! And it looks like yours.

Perhaps the translation from Thai to English isn't always smooth?

It just can't be smooth when you use a completely different alphabet. All they have to go on is a tone or a sound and they pick letters to try to duplicate it.

Also the tags often are written in pencil by hand, and as Jim says they are spelling the names phonetically so certainly get it wrong quite often. Or sometimes we can't read them correctly either.

What's the phrase? "Lost in translation" ??

Lindsey, how is your Phrag. doing? Keep us posted. By the way, the tag should read Phragmipedium Umbriel (Phragmipedium Grande x Phragmipedium sargentianum)
