Yes, I have more on the way from seed and I'm planning on getting a much larger planter and planting some more seeds and get them going before fall sets in. They're fun to grow.

Here's today's picture of it, some with yellow flowers on the same plant...

And this is in my alley. I think it might be a wild form of purslane, but my neighbor told me it was just some sort of weed. Does anyone know what this thing is?

Nice plants! The yellow & pink blooms are on separate individuals.

Maybe you could post plant #2 to Plant ID forum?

I don't know if it's wild purslane either. Becky is much better at identifying that than I. She'll be along later.

The ":wild purslane" scares me. Don't eat it. Whistling I always wonder if it's spurge which is very poisonous. Those leaves sure don't have the succulent fatness of purslane.

Love the pink and yellow ornamental!

These are both spurge.

Honestly, I'm not a weed expert. If I don't see happy blooms, I treat it as a weed just in case. Crossing Fingers!

Good advice. I will just leave it alone and not try to harvest it or get it into my garden.

I have plenty of edible ones growing in my garden.

Here's today's photo of the next generation of the ornamental ones. As you can see, they are growing very rapidly.

The number of flowers from this plant seems to be increasing, yay!

Here is an update of the progress of the next generation of the ornamental ones, and I just planted the last of my seeds in the container on the right...
Thumb of 2016-09-01/jeffphx/c891b1

And if you look closely, you can see some common purslane (not the ornamental kind) coming up from escaped seeds in the rock garden below the containers.

I have some old fashioned portulaca flower (not purslane) seeds coming in the mail that I wanted to try growing. The person who sold them to me said that they reseed themselves aggressively, so I am excited about that. I would love to have a lot of them growing in my yard.

I was at Moon Valley Nursery in Phoenix on Monday and they had four ornamental purslane for sale. No blooms which was very puzzling since it was mid-day. The leaves looked old, I passed on them this late in the season.

I went to Home Depot and Walmart and I did not find any ornamental purslane. I found some portulaca, but they seemed old and spent, so I passed on them. My goal is to eventually get purslane and portulaca to reseed themselves on their own, so I can just sit back and enjoy them.

The common purslane is rather weedy and has begun to take over sunny parts of my yard. Perfect! I just go out and harvest it from time to time, and put it in salads and omelets.

This is the latest picture of the new ones which were planted from seed in August. They've started flowering.

Thumb of 2016-09-11/jeffphx/fc593e

I was also able to take some cuttings from the earlier one and grow new plants from the cuttings. The earlier plant is still blooming, by the way. I need to take another picture of it.

I've also planted some portulaca seeds, and they germinated and have just started to grow. They look promising. They are so much smaller than purslane sprouts. I was surprised by that.

I thought I should write down my method for getting both purslane and portulaca to grow from seed right here:

1. Pre-wet potting soil by gently mixing it with a small amount of water. Go slow with the water and don't make it too soupy. You want to use just barely enough water to get the potting soil uniformly moist, BEFORE placing it in any container.

2. Once the potting soil is moistened, place it in a container, but don't over pack it and don't firmly press it down into the container. Once it is at a level you want it to be at, then give it a gentle watering to help it settle down into the container, and to make sure it is very moist. At this point, if it settles down in the container to a level that is too low, you can just add some more moist potting soil, and get it up to the level you want it to be at.

3. Purslane and portulaca seeds need bright light and warmth to germinate. Do NOT cover them with any soil. Just lightly scatter them on top of the moist soil. Don't touch them after you scatter them.

4. At this point, there are two ways of watering them-- misting with a sprayer, or watering from the bottom (this is the best way, but who has time for it?). I just lightly mist them with a sprayer. The key is to point the spay nozzle up so it is horizontal rather than spraying down into the container, so that the spray is gently falling down to the seeds rather than hitting them directly, to reduce the risk of washing seeds away, or the risk of washing potting soil on top of the seeds.

5. Now place the container where the seeds can get bright morning sun and afternoon shade, so they get enough light to germinate, but not so much that they dry out before having a chance to spout.

6. Beware of wind. It will dry them out too fast.
