Hi all, Just wanted to hear from you all regarding any change in strategy for caring of these EU semps that may not get here earlier than mid October. I see from the historical weather for my neighborhood that cool nites will be in the 40's and upper 30's by end of next month. There may be possible rain 1/3 of the month.

Should I still be thinking of getting out my Quickstart for the offsets that are coming? I think these will not be like seedlings with developing root system that people have already started. I assume offsets will not have much of a root system and thus we will have to help start it. So Quickstart or not? If not, I guess my job would be to let whatever I receive sit on very light moist soil and help them keep alive as the cold approaches.

My garage is pretty dark and I have front porch and balconies. I guess the tray of babies will be protected by the space that is surrounded by at least 2 walls and what light they get will be monitored during the day when I am home and if too sunny I will put shade/frost cloth over them so as to not sunburn them if they don't have roots.

I wouldn't do Quickstart this late in the year. I did not use it on the new semps I got last fall.

Good point Bev... it's not springtime anymore. I tentatively agree with abstaining from the QuickStart. At this juncture my plan is to pot them in two or four inch pots and let them spend the winter in my greenhouse/cold-frame. I think it will simply be milder and I can prevent heavy rain or early freezes and other such weather debacles.

Mine will be staying in pots on the patio all winter.

Mine will be in clay pots on the porch. We've finally had some rain, and I've been collecting that. I will probably use a spray bottle to mist them with the rain water. Thanks to Bev @websemps for the rain collection idea!

Well, to hold my attention while I was waiting to hear about EU semp delivery, I ordered these heufilli from Mountain Crest: Purple Haze, Milady, Lemon Sky and Goldrand.
And since the latest update, all the rainwater collected for the EU semps will now be used for these instead.

Oooh.... check out those luxuriantly wide leaves on 'Milady'. Very Echeveria-ish. MCG has some nice cultivars recently. So I guess our "Euro purchase strategy" is to purchase something from the US. Hilarious!

Yeah Tim... slightly cheaper and instant gratification at this point for me at least. Funny after hubby chose the heuf 'Apache to bring home a few years ago, I thought OK no more heuf's for us! Now that I am the same age as Mr. V, I've weaken and am allowing these few in the house... Hilarious!

Yes Bev, Isn't it nice to be 39???

Sorry I've been absent from comments. Am working on a concerto non-stop except for the few moments I rush into the yard to do some work. Got the bearded iris seeds planted this morning before the rains hit in the PM.

EIGHT SHOPPING BAGS full of seed heads of semps. That's going to be a LOT of seedlings come spring.

I am growing more and more fond of the heuffs. When I was starting, we had three, all pretty much green. Now I have hundreds of red and purple seedlings each year, most that I pitch. Pulled out two the other day that are great grandchildren of 'Giuseppi Spiny' and one is dark red and one is dark purple with almost yellow spines as tips. GS is rather small but these are big so the effect is more dramatic.

Back to practicing...

Kevin

Woohoo, I've been keeping busy lately! I'm so happy the hip injections seem to be working! I'm getting psyched about meeting some of you awesome semp folk this spring! Group hug

At the Dr's, a nurse mentioned that her sister is getting into semps! Hurray!
Apparently, there's a man, here in WV, and he claims to have the largest semp collection on the East coast! The sister drives to his place and buys plants from him. I got her sisters # and I plan on calling her for more info.

I know, it sounds too goo to be true, but ya never know, he might be legit.
At any rate, I'll be checking him out. Could be a local source, at long last!

Finally some cooler evening temps! My semps are lovin' it! Hot and ugly humid yesterday and today. Still collecting rain, the potted semps really love it.
Big hugs all around, making chicken cutlets, Terri's famous mashed potatoes and broccoli for dinner. Messy hands on the ipad...not good.

Sounds like even if the guy with the collection has the biggest semp collection of the red states on the East Coast, it might be worth checking out. I for one would look at any semp collection that anybody has. I've seen Lynn's, Kevin's Patty's (circa 2015 only), Connie's and last but not least, Tim's.

Of course nothing beats what I saw on this youtube link for a collection that's most impressive. (A lot of you already saw this pre 2015). This collection hopefully brings the subject back to something European...

OK I swear I saw in that video Patty's NOID bright green roller that she planted between semps in her Albany garden. Yes it is in that semp menagerie somewhere!
