@flaflwrgrl I see that the temps today are the same in both places, however, our humidity is 63% compared to 56% in DeLand. We will be going back in July. Oh joy!

Sherri, great find.

Its 4:25 in gainesville, temp 93, feels like temp 100, and wicked humidity. I dont know how Deland lucked out with 56% humidity, they are very lucky.

We had low humidity here in Lake City too. If I recall correctly at about that same time Pam, it was 93 & 54% humidity. I recall because I looked at our weather station just before I stepped onto the back porch before starting dinner prep.

I could not find the humidity number. All I know is I felt like the feels like temp. I run very hot anyway. Now that I think about it, I was just very hot but I didnt feel like I could barely breathe. Right now its 100 percent humidity....raining. Not hard enough tho. Anything welcome.

We could sure use some rain here. We had lots of rain a couple of weeks ago but it's really dry again. I try to get out early in the morning to hand water plants but didn't get to it this morning. Rain is predicted this afternoon but if the skies don't open up I will go out early evening to water.

As I've aged, the humidity seems to bother me more and more each year and I sometimes think that if my husband were agreeable to move elsewhere, we wouldn't still be living in the state of Florida but he's been here since before he was a year old and he can't imagine living elsewhere.

I do like that we don't have freezing cold, snow and ice in the winter but geesh ... can't somewhere else take some of this humidity? Current conditions here at 9:11 a.m. is 78.6º and 94% humidity. Blinking It's very muggy/sticky outside and I'm sure it will get worse as the day progresses!

I'm with you, Lin. Not at all tolerant of the hot, humid days. My solution is to travel in the summer to cooler places . . well my kids are in Salt Lake City and it's forecast to go over 100 there but at least it is DRY. I can work outside until noonish there, then again in the evenings very happily.

Otherwise, I make it very short forays into the garden, 10 minutes or less if the sun is out. That way I keep my head from pounding, and can recover with a little rest at the computer, and a cool drink. It's amazing what I can get done in a 10 minute dash - just sprayed all my orchids, and filled the watering cans from the rain barrels at the same time - so IF the rain comes later there is room in the barrels.

It rained heavily on Sunday afternoon, and after that whole thing went by MY MY, it was lovely outside, down around 80, breezy and felt cool. Such a treat.

It is true about the 10 minute dashes, I was out this morning, it was close, but not so hot yet, but mosquitos were out. In two ten minute runs, I got three earthboxes ready for some daylily seedlings. Three will only hold 30, but another 10 minute run and thats 1/3 of the seedlings planted. Ive let them go to long, but....the heat. My regular daylilies have gone so summer dormant you can hardly find them. There is no way I can afford to water all those every day in this heat and dryness.

I had a Colocasia Jack's Giant come up in a large container with a Japanese Maple in it. I went out this morning and wrangled the EE out of the pot. For some reason my Jack's Giants never get very large but they multiply like crazy. I'll bring this one to my son this weekend. He lives in the NC mountains so it will not be hardy for him and won't (shouldn't) become a pest. That took more than 10 minutes - my limit usually - so I am wiped out now. Probably won't get anything done for the rest of the day. Lot's of rain forecast but we probably won't get any.

I've been spoiled by our first 3 summers here. We had NO idea of this when we came here; it was simply a VERY happy accident. Lake City does not *normally* have the humidity the rest of the state has. Imagine our surprise!!!! Yes, it gets hot & many times our temps. are higher than those of you along the coast BUT we all know how much the humidity can affect how you FEEL the heat.
El Nino killed us last summer though with the ungodly temps. & higher humidity. Now this summer is even worse earlier.

Well, they do say that the El Nino is waning so - maybe it will get better again OR maybe we will have a rash of hurricanes and wish it would come back . . .

At least if that happens, you probably will be better off than those of us down here on the coast, Ann. Shrug! Hilarious!

It is cookin out there again, and the sun is blazing but there are thunderheads all around us, so there's hope of a cooling rain shower. I'll make sure it happens - I need to have a passport picture taken so I'm actually doing something to my hair (usually just ponytail it and I'm done) so that will assure rain in the next hour.

Yep Elaine, you're going to make it rain cats & dogs by doing your hair. Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious!

Yes, well, I've certainly been through my share of hurricanes in my 59 years in FL & I truly am glad to be inland some finally so the brunt maybe won't get us.

There is rain on the radar close to us now so we are mostly overcast & have a nice breeze which is helping cool things some. Still, I hope the rain manages to hit us.

Elaine, keep fiddling with your hair, it is rumbling all around us but not a drop of rain to be seen. .

Weather man said we have a 30% chance for the next seven days. As long as I get a few of those days right over Lutz, I'll be happy. My Salvias look pretty sad by the end of the day. Last week, when I was weeding, even some of the weeds were wilting! But you know it's really bad when the Spanish Needles start wilting. When those things wilt, you've got major drought conditions. I haven't seen that happen for a few years, though.

Exactly! I really start getting worried when the heavy duty native "weeds" start wilting. Yes, when Spanish Needle wilts you know you're in deep trouble. Ours haven't reached the wilt stage just yet but it might not be much longer. Every day they kick back our good chances of rain to the following day. Rolling my eyes. I just hope we get a good soaking soon.

Was in the drive thru at Panera yesterday and these anoles were "snuggling" under the menu board.

Thumb of 2016-07-01/mellielong/4fdd49

This is my first year growing Liatris spicata. I've been meaning to for years, but never seemed to get around to it. Anyway, I'm excited to report that the fastest grower has buds that are now turning purple! Hurray! If you look, you can see the road I live on in the background. It's a cul-de-sac. The lady at the other end is a professor at USF (I think botany or biology) and she gets super excited to see all my native plants. And everyone loves the butterflies.
