So excited to own my first pitcher plant!!! Thought I would share. Any advice/tips? (: He is in a southern facing window! What is the species of this guy also?

Do you know the name of your new friend? If its highland or lowland? Those answers will help you determine how to take care of your Nepenthes.

Lovely Nepenthes plant Lindsey! Sorry cannot help with its complete name, sometimes there are hybrids.

I use rainwater (if I get to collect some during winter) if none, then I used distilled water to water my Nepenthes. My growing conditions here are much drier, and so far I find it grows much better when I make it sit in distilled water. It will vary depending on your humidity levels. Good luck! Enjoy growing them! It is so much fun watching it form new leaves and pitchers.

Had a pitcher plant last year facing east outside got to be about 4' in length, never let it dry out, always used RO water or rainwater.

That is awesome!!! Thank you for sharing. (: One girl today told me to only use distilled water for the plant, so I called the greenhouse where I bought it and asked what they had been watering it with and they said just normal water....what should I use???? Thanks!

Lindsey if you have rainwater that is the best to use. My area has no rain right now so I use distilled water. Some also uses reverse osmosis water. Water quality in our different locales varies and some are rather heavy in salt and other dissolved solids so to play safe I go with distilled water.

Okay, maybe I'm just overthinking and being paranoid, but I spent a lot of money on this guy and I am concerned. In some of the leaves I am noticing little tears that are outlined in brown... what is this from??

On which carnivore Lindsey? and which leaves, is it the lower, older leaves or the newer growing ones?

I can not be sure but it looks like my N. sanguinea; The care should be the same. Mine sit outdoors during the summer under a trellis.They get morning sun and get watered daily (they of course need to stay moist), I use rain water from rain barrels for all my carnivores and orchids but as Tarev said (and many pros) as long as your city or well water is low in minerals it should be fine (many people use reverse osmosis if it's high in minerals). Distilled water is fine.
I don't know what caused the tears; it looks as though other leaves might have scraped along it during shipping. The leaves look healthy outside of that and pitchers look to be forming just fine. If leaves have brown (mine are reddish brown) streaks or spots, don't let it worry you - it is perfectly normal.

I drain my rain barrels and store them for the winter. I then just put a 5 gallon bucket out to catch water over winter (I don't need as much since it's not hot). a smallish watering can is filled from that and I let it sit overnight indoors to warm to room temp before watering.
It seems the same thing could be done the rest of the year if you live where it rains enough.

Is this your first Nepenthe? I get to engrossed in the pitchers and the beauty of them plant I usually forget it's a carnivore. Depending on the species they are very easy to grow; the "exotic" ones can be temperamental, but like any plant if we select what does well in our environment they reward our efforts!

A tarp is so much smarter, trust me...

Also the cuts just look cosmetic, don't freak.

Then again I'm getting my first 2 nepenthes tomorrow, mom's birthday though, so I have a reason to freak, I won't be there when they arrive!
Your drosera is beautiful, did you buy in person? Or a website, what one if you did?

Hi Lindsey, sorry don't know either what causes that damage on your Nepenthes. I have not encountered that in mine, usually I just get the usual drying out on the oldest lower leaves, and then it is done, but new leaves form from the top, so life goes on.

In the meantime, just observe a bit more, and see if it is spreading on the other leaves. Maybe it is just old damage.
