Prior to coming to this forum I had never heard the term "bud-building". I believe I understand what the premise is. I have some plants that I think are bud builders. Could someone look at the photos and verify for me? (I apologize for the photos. My computer was murdered last night and I have to do all of this on my phone)

Yes, that looks like bud building to me. It looks like the plant is finished blooming except for the last large bud and often a smaller one. Then when the large bud blooms, the smaller bud gets larger and a new small bud is created. This process continues on for some time. The only drawback is it never creates an huge display of blooms at one time. But it does add color to the garden for a long time.

It's where new buds continue to form at the top of the scape, as illustrated here:

I'm not sure if that's what's happening in your pictures.

The scapes all look to me like they are following the correct pattern, the photo with the hand almost makes it look like the buds in the background are on that scape, but they appear to actually be on a scape in the background causing it to look like it has multiple buds.

The scape with my hand in the photo had a seed pod at its lowest point, a small bud, a medium sized bud, and the bloom beside the medium bud.

One other question...bud-building isn't a type of rebloom is it? All of the buds on this scape count towards its bud count?

That sounds correct to me, when that flower expires, the medium bud will enlarge and flower, then the process will continue for some time. I have had a few create seed pods in the process.

Bud building most certainly is a type of reblooming, I am still confused over it being included in the bud count? Some don't think rebloom should be counted at all being they don't get rebloom.

Bud-builders don't rebloom? So they don't grow additional scapes?

Yes they do, they often produce a lot of additional scapes for me. But further north people often don't get any rebloom at all.

I would say yes to count towards bud count, no to its being rebloom.

Well, I must admit I have no official source for including bud building with rebloom. Just that in the recent thread " Re-bloom Cultivars" bud building was mentioned several times and seemed to me to be generally accepted as a form of rebloom. That might have just been my personal interpretation of the conversations.

For registration the AHS refers to rebloom as more than one cycle of bloom, or a succession of bloom periods. To me that would mean new scapes each cycle/period but that's my interpretation. I don't know if there's any official ruling somewhere.

I do wish they would go into much more detail and give examples of rebloom, it is so confusing to so many people even here on this site, and not just among newbies.

As a newbie, I find it very confusing. Is there a board of some sort that evaluates terms on the AHS site? Maybe we could appeal to them for further clarification?

@Char,
I am sure she can explain about the way terms are decided on by AHS!

You could ask the AHS ombudsman to answer the question:

http://www.daylilies.org/AskTh...

Another option would be to look up known bud builders and see if they are registered as rebloomers. 'Lola Branham' is said to be a bud builder but it is not registered as a rebloomer.

Yes true, but many daylilies that are not registered at rebloomers do actually rebloom.

Is that because rebloom is so climate dependent? In theory, couldn't something bred in the north not be classified as a rebloomer because of the shorter season up north but then rebloom when it is planted in warmer climates?

Galaxy Explosion is not listed as a bud builder, but it definitely appeared to be one for me. It bloomed longer than any of my other daylilies. It has not rebloomed for me this season ... yet. Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Galaxy Explosion') :
