Anyone know what the numbers mean in the common name fields for these?
(gone so no longer clickable)
Trumpet is obviously not a species name so I will edit that out but when I do, it shows that there is already another cultivar named 'African Queen', Lily (Lilium African Queen) also a trumpet so I assume they are both one and the same but I need to know what those numbers are in the common name field. If they are something that is needed, they need to be put in another area, comments or something.

The number appears to be something automatically assigned to the entry by the system, so you should leave it. Yes, edit out the "trumpet" part. I assume you are entering your African Queen into the database. This will put your entry in with the other AQs.

Since there is already a data box filled out, you just need to review it and propose changes if you deem necessary. In particular look at the zone box and change to your zone if it is colder than the one there. That won't apply to you, Sue, being where you are. I don't bother to fill zone boxes because just about everything grows here in z8.

I'm going to have Dave add addition fields for Division, orientation, maybe hybridizer.

As for the numbers, I guess you need to ask Dave...

No I am not adding anything of mine, just deleting some errors and when I went to delete the trumpet out of the species section, it alerted me to the existing entry so I will delete the duplicate one.
Isn't there a minimum hardiness zone for the different lily classes?

I'll have Dave take a look at the numbers, because of the parenthesis, it's not anything I can remove as it does not even show up in the edit so he'll have to do a sweep of them throughout the database.

Well whatever the numbers were, it must have been something that Dave was working on because they are all gone now! I never even got a chance to ask him. Hilarious!

Sue, we're working on a separate area like daylilies and irises have for the lilies. It will have zone info.

Thanks Polly! I am not familiar enough with lilies to know if certain classes have zone limits but figured there would be something better like an across the board system rather than someone entering something lower each time. But even daylilies and roses can be grown in lower zones than suggested, that's where the comments come in so people can report their success or failure with growing them. Thumbs up

This is an informative thread. I noticed new entries as of yesterday were assigned just the box and a note that the plant was up for review.
This seems easier than loading all the data everytime and then find out the plant is already listed.
I am glad you women are handling this.I would be completely lost.

And we're not? Pard has taken to eating ice cream. Mags is doing who knows what to keep from going nuts, and I'm considering joining Moby in her tequila.

We had to do that review thing because we were getting too many duplicates, and didn't know about them unless we came across one at random. Some were with misspellings and some, like in the roses, can have multiple names. Zuzu already has the additional names listed but currently the search is not picking them up. So while it may be inconvenient for some to have to wait for a new entry to be approved before they can add a photo, it was the only way to set it up for now.
Another problem we were finding was some people added a species name to new entries so it would drop it toward the end of the genus listing and when someone did a search, they would only be looking down the list and once they get through the alphabet, it starts to list the species, and some of those also had the cultivar names attached. There were several liliums that were duplicates, for instance, one would have Lilium and so-and-so cultivar name, and another would have Lilium asiatic and the same cultivar name. I found it easiest to do a search by cultivar name now, sometimes that name is shared with roses or iris but at least that way you can see if the name exists within your genus search. Another good way is to search by genus and then click on the letter in the alphabet for cultivar names and make sure to scroll all the way through them. That will get harder though as the cultivar lists increase.
Some people also have a bit of trouble understanding the difference between genus, species and cultivar name. I cleaned a few of those up too.

I asked Dave to set irises and lilies both so the common name that comes up first is iris or lily. It was coming up siberian iris, water iris, who knows what. And that really helps me a lot.

Thanks for the info Sue. There are a ton of duplicates, especially in the irises. But we're working our way thru.

It's becoming a full time job just about! Blinking I have about 75 to 100 new daylily image entries a day lately plus maybe half that for detail entries and then I also do a little work within the database. Getting too far behind in my gardening. Glare

Actually it was very active last night. I worked till around 1:30 am west coast time and Moby in her time zone 2 hours later than that.

Joy in Kalama unloaded her hard drive on us lol and I was smacking them out as fast as I could, some taking longer; Moby whipping out data details and Joy letting loose on more. Thanks Joy!! Smiling And other additions y'all missed in the wee hours as you pleasantly slept the night away Big Grin .

But yeah, it could be worse, there are kabillions of daylilies!

Daylilies from Joy too. Big Grin Only I can't do all the details, takes too much time. That's for rainy days. I do have some that are helping with those at least so it's not just all on me.

I find it easier (to my mind) to try keeping up with a new entries as them come in rather than trolling for plants needing details. That Joy ~ her garden must be something else! We should press her for a virtual tour.

Found myself making mistakes and decided to take a break. It was very windy yesterday so I spent a fair amount of time wrestling 8 ft. tomato plants back into a semi-upright position. Today, I shall to a little baking and roast a wagon-load of maters for freezing.

One thing I dislike seeing in the PF is the type (ei: trumpet) thrown in front of the name. I'd like just the name but it would also be nice to be able to 'sort' by hybrid / division.

Afternoon snack, anyone?
