Cultivar poll time again ......

Jon and I would like members to please pick cultivars that they OWN, that ALSO list several other owners (at "least" 3 members that have the cultivar) as "have" in the database so that more members here on ATP can post their evaluations. The more members that own a plant, the better (to have numerous evaluations). Please also make sure that you post the correct name and spelling of the cultivars you list. You can list up to 10 cultivars that you actually own and are willing to post an evaluation for when the cultivar is featured as the Daylily of the Day.

And don't forget that you can post an evaluation at any time to any of the Daylily of the Day threads. An acorn will be awarded for each evaluation. You can post "annual" evaluations of any cultivars at least a year after your previous evaluation of that cultivar. (And earn another acorn tip!) Previous featured Daylilies of the Day cultivar threads can be found in this forum:
http://garden.org/forums/view/potdattic/

Let the next list of cultivars begin ..... (list up to 10 cultivars that have not been featured yet, that you and other members own.) Please check before adding to your list, to make sure that it is has not already been featured. Thanks!

This poll will end on July 29, 2016.

Do you want evaluations from people with new clumps of a specific cultivar are only from those who have well established clumps? Most of my plants are only a year old now so I'm hoping that all the specs will keep improving...

Amber (and any members wondering) .....

If you own the plant regardless of how long, all reports are relevant. What we like to read in the evaluations is info about stats such as transplanting (if new, how it did), length it takes to establish (some establish right away, others can take years), photos of blooms, scapes, entire plant (clump shots are awesome!), scape height, bloom size, number of branches, whether or not it is rust resistant (if you know), how the blooms open, how many blooms per scape, does it multiply fast or slow, etc. As well as your personal opinion of the cultivar. You can read some of the Daylily of Day threads to get an idea about what to write. Measurements are important whether they meet the breeder's stats or not.

Any information you share is used to help other gardeners determine whether or not the cultivar is a plant they should consider for their zone and climate. So mention your zone and climate as well. Everyone loves to read reviews with lots of info!

AND .... you can add an additional evaluation of the plant every year! (And earn an acorn once a year.)

And negative evaluations are good too. If your plant failed to thrive, or it died. If you didn't like the cultivar, tell us why.

Think about what YOU would like to read about a cultivar that you are considering adding to your garden. And then write about that!

But I only give acorns for actual evaluations. If you just got the plant and don't really know anything about it yet, then wait until it's been with you long enough to write an evaluation. You can post an evaluation at ANY TIME and earn an acorn. Evaluation do not have to be added when the plant is spotlighted. Evaluations can be added at any time! But additional (acorn earning) evaluations do have to be about a year apart. So annual evaluations are wonderful! And this is a great way to help others as well as earn an acorn for yourself for each evaluation. Thumbs up Thumbs up Thumbs up

Does an evaluation have to include measurements? I have all the info except those. One reason why I haven't been taking measurements is lack of a clear idea HOW to take measurements. Is there a tutorial or directions somewhere that you recommend for teaching that?

No. If you don't have scapes or blooms yet or if you just couldn't get the measurements, that is fine. But would love to have measurements included.

Parts of a daylily: http://www.daylilies.org/ahs_dictionary/ImageMap.html

Check out these links for measurements:

How to determine branching: http://www.daylilies.org/ahs_dictionary/branching.html

Quoted from the AHS registration page: http://www.daylilies.org/DaylilyDB/reginfo.php

How to measure a bloom: Imagine a wire circle that is just large enough for the flower to pass through without touching. The diameter of the circle in inches will be the diameter of the flower. If you prefer, use a ruler and measure from tip to tip at the widest point and this will be the diameter. The main thing to remember is to measure as naturally standing - do not uncurl recurved flowers for the measurement. The second thing to remember in recording this measurement is that a flower will be classed as miniature (i.e., less than 3 inches), small (3 inches to 4-1/2 inches), large (4-1/2 inches or more), and extra-large (7" and greater) according to the registered diameter. For instructions on measuring Spider daylilies, see the discussion under "FORM".

How to measure the height of a scape: The height of scape should be given in inches as it grows in your garden. Place a yard stick at ground level and measure to the tip of the scape. Since there is apt to be variation in height between scapes, give the average in full inches; fractions of inches will be discarded.

And these are explanations of Daylily Terms:

Becky--I understand not wanting to repeat cultivars. But is there a quick list of which ones to not use? The thread on daily has everybody's on NGA's daily like salvias and plumeria. Hard to find if one was already picked. Or maybe I just do not know where to look!

Many blessings for a safe and joyful weekend!

What you can do to check: Go to the Plant Database and type in a cultivar name. On the very right you will see a photo of the bloom. Scroll down below the photo and if it has already been featured as a Daylily of the Day, you will see it mentioned. See my example:

No need to remember, when you are checking to see how many people are showing to own it just look over to the right underneath the photo.
