I wonder if the stolons are so long because of how large the hen is? Lovely semp too!
I tip my hat to you.

Here's Squatters Bed last year with just-planted Unicorn rosette to the left of the open space of soil.
Thumb of 2017-04-14/webesemps/9c0e41

Since then, I had placed a heuf. 'Bronze Ingot' in the open space and then had to move Bronze away this year to accommodate the Unicorn rosette that grew taller than the side of the grating. Then the offsets came in and I moved her and her chicks towards the higher rise of the grate so that mother rosette wouldn't bang up against the grate and bird netting. I can't really let those offsets go off as there's nowhere in the Squatters Bed for them to grow.

Good eye, Greg. Yes, got that from a friend who's 'knees' are giving out on him. His mind will go next and he will have forgotten that he offered it to me.

That is not a usual way for Unicorn to produce offsets, they normally stay close.
How much sun do they get?

That was my biggest semp last year end of July at a diameter of about 5".

Thumb of 2016-07-29/parttimegardener/6775d4 Thumb of 2016-07-29/parttimegardener/a978a0

After having taken off the offspring it grew on and has now reached a diameter of 9". It's about to produce its second set of offspring. All 4 offsets produced (on short stolons fortunately) survived the winter and are now themselves about 2.5 to 3" in diameter.
My wife wants me to transplant the mother in an even bigger pot to make it reach its full potential, but if it continues to grow like this it will reach it before I find time for transplant... Big Grin

Most probably a NOID, Bev. Did not find any reference for the name I received it with ('Bensheimer Riese' = giant of/from Bensheim). But its huge.

That one is huge! With stolons that long, I'm afraid I'd be detaching and planting them quickly. It's not a good look. I love it when the offsets are all snugged up against mama.

I like that look too with Mom and offsets. My Unicorn semp looks like one of those mothers who put a leash on their child in the shopping mall (I know, with some kids it's a necessity).

I am showing these not to brag but just to let you see what my semps with just morning sun and a little bit of bat guano in part of the soil mix can do to these semps. I don't plant to use this mix anymore as I don't want semps so big that they won't fit within the grating cover that I put there to protect from critters.

Here's Grammens, a little etiolated and strappy measuring at 9 in. wide and 3 and half in. tall
Thumb of 2017-05-08/webesemps/a59993

Here's Unicorn at 9 and half wide and 4 in. tall; look at the size of those stolons with offsets on the end.
Thumb of 2017-05-08/webesemps/d03cfd

Here's one of those "Grandma's semp" tectorum at 6in wide and 4in tall
Thumb of 2017-05-08/webesemps/c177e9

All are starting to grow beyond the grating when I bring it down over the plants. I think I will just take the offsets I see coming out and plant them in renovated bed when I re-line the bed with hardware cloth on 5 sides and place a leaner soil mix in per Lynn. That way no moles in the bed and smaller semps?

Thanks Karen, but I think I don't want to use fertilizer to get bigger growth in my semps even though I like using (bat guano) for other plants. This was an unexpected outcome with my semps.

Great plants/photos and great plan for the future offsets. Those semps really are amazing. I couldn't believe how big they were when I was there a week ago.

Thank you Lynn for your advice.
Hubby used an acronym today that I had to ask what it stood for. It was SME and he said it was an industry consultant's term. It stands for 'Subject Matter Expert" That's what you are to me, Lynn. nodding Hilarious!

Enjoying this thread with all the rain and cool weather here and wondered how any of my recently acquired semps measured up.
Just went outside and measured "Carmen" at 10 1/2 inches!

I got her two weeks ago in a 4 inch pot at local garden center. She was all propped up on lower leaves to avoid wet mix and not invade flat mates' space. I transplanted her into a 12' bowl with Gritty Mix. When she finally lets her skirts down all the way her leaf tips will almost touch the side of the bowl.
No chicks....do you think she will produce some?
