I must say, it blows e away every year, that people will bid up the price of a seed 13 days out. First off, lots of other seeds come up in that 13 days.
There are 3 of so people that will pay anything for a seed so long as they win. I guess what no fun for the bidder, its not that you loose, its that you really never have a chance, is a big windfall for the seller. So thats good I guess.

I know what you mean, Pam. I bid on stuff to get some new genetics, but I always set a limit for what I'm willing to spend. It amazes me sometimes to see the price skyrocket, sometimes even far more than what the parent plants are even worth. That's when I figure that it is just a bidding war between two (or sometimes more) people that have loads of money. So I sit back and watch the show and wonder what they do for a living to pay upwards of $25, $50 or sometimes more per seed!

I bid against someone on there last year for some seeds when I was just learning how everything worked. Now that person runs up every single one of my bids when possible. It's usually only by a few bucks, because I do have my limits, but it pisses me off to know that I seem to have to pay more every time I want to bid. I notice that this person doesn't get bid against very much, so I think he/she probably employs this practice to their advantage. The bad thing is, you can't really prove it, so there's nothing that can be done Thumbs down

I've even bid on some older stuff just to see...and sure enough, the person bid against me on all three very random bids. I hope they enjoyed them Rolling on the floor laughing

I hate it when people are spiteful like that. Angry It doesn't seem fair that someone would do that to you.

I will say this, I almost bid against you a couple times in the last few weeks Whistling . I always try to go now and see who is bidding so I caught it
I do find, that people with the same taste, or looking for the thing, come up against each other often. I know I feel everytime I want to bid, the same person has bid before me, just like against me.

I try not to bid against people who are on here. If it is something that i really wanted, I will wait to see if their bids were bidded out by someone else and then I will make a bid. I don't want to ruin a good buy for them if noone else bids for the item. Sorry if I bidded against anyone on here last year. It was my first time buying from the LA and did not know alot of you. I have to admit that I got carried away last year and might have paid too much for some wins.

Its an auction, everyone understands that and would not be upset. I too try not to bid against people I 'know'. I try not to bid against people who are just starting either, I want them to get hooked ;-). The seeds will keeping coming and coming and coming for awhile now, Im just not going to stress.

I have never bid on LA, but I certainly had some strange happenings other auction websites. Back when people were easily identified on one auction site, I even had one bidder try to send me viruses in e-mail attachments after I had bid against them. Shrug!

Pam,
Please feel free to bid against me, that's how it works...especially if you have the same tastes! Heck, contact me, we might work together and split the number of seeds Rolling on the floor laughing

Please note that I was not referring to the average 'someone bid against me'. This was targeted--as soon as I bid against this person, they went to every single one of my open bids and bid against me!

It takes awhile to look it up--but heck, I've been recovering from having the nerves burned in my back, so I've got time on my hands--you can go in and see where this is common practice for this particular bidder. Anytime someone bids against him/her, they go to the other person's open bids and bids against them on everything else they are bidding on too. This is just bad for business, and puts people off.

Does anyone know of hybridizers that sell seeds for a set price? Just curious, and I know they need to make money too to cover their costs.

To end this rant, I truly don't mind the competition, and I know it's good for sellers (and I hope to sell some seeds soon). Many of us are just starting out hybridizing, and buy seeds to increase our genetic pools without spending $$$ on the latest and greatest cultivars that may or may not do well in our gardens. It is difficult to bid against people you know or chat with here on the forum; but I don't take it personally if it happens. Like Pam mentioned above, I do try to avoid bidding if it's someone I'm familiar with. I usually add it to my watch list and cheer you on silently from my couch...like the Lily Auction Olympics Rolling on the floor laughing

That is horrible! I wanted to acknowledge your post, but didn't want to give it a "thumbs up". This is when we need a thumbs down or dislike icon!!

People really need to use the closed auction link as well. I just was checking on the price seeds were going with a certain flower in the cross. I notice that last week, some seeds of a cross sold for 33.00, this week there is a bidding frenzy and they are already up to more than twice that much Shrug! I never feel Ive lost an auction, if I know the person who won, overpaid, merely by getting in a bidding war, and not taking a deep breath. Or...they REALLY want those seeds, and want them now.

If you want to quickly agree with someone or like what they say, I just click on the green thumb beside the acorn at the bottom of the post. Sometimes I wish there was a thumbs down to show that I disliked what happened, such as sending a virus to someone for bidding against you as mentioned in the post above. I didn't want to give a thumbs up/agree to that post so I quoted it to show I thought it was something snarky to do to someone. Guess there's not a quick way bc then someone would think you are disagreeing with them...oh, the life of computers-gotta love it!

Wow, that is so malicious of them, Valerie! I cannot believe people would do such a thing over seeds or anything else for that matter. If you participate in an auction, you have to accept the fact that there will be other people bidding for the items.

Regina, I noticed the same happened to me last year with one of the bidder. That person went through all my auctions and bidded up against me after I bidded in one of the auction that he/she bidded first. After I saw what he/she was doing, I tried to avoid all auctions that he/she bidded on. The person continued to go after my auctions until I took sometimes off from bidding.

Bidding...don't you just love it....lol. Thank You!

It is important to remember that these aren't magic beans. As much as I like to think I know what I'm doing, it's always Mother Nature who has the last say, or laugh...lol.

There seems to be plenty of seeds to go around. "Priceless" stuff usually comes on again, and again. Enjoy the journey....and hopefully some of the results!
