Does anyone here have any experience with what he's doing?
Could some one explain what's he doing and what's the purpose of cut the leaves. Also, what is the white paste.

Unfortunately the presenter does not show pictures of the form he is wanting to achieve with his method.

Roman is one of few that cut a ring around the edge after sealing or covering the bottom. He will get more roots out to the side faster then the Thailand version of just cutting off the root and putting a plastic disc to cover the area. Raman's cutting seems to make the roots go our straight.
I have done this on one of my root stock, I like the look of roots running along the soil with a short caudex and an umbrella of branches and flowers. Yes this takes time and manipulation.
Roman uses powdered cement he just adds water to. The bottle is just root hormone.

Tin these tree's are very hardy. There are many things done to them. We can watch them through video's. I have seen different colored roots from different trees be grafted on to the other so you see a big color difference of light and dark roots. I have seen them be manipulated into shapes like lions and fantasy shapes. Some of those are even painted for more effect.
Most competitions overseas will graft onto very old stock. The roots and or branches must be perfect to be excepted. If you can think a shape they will attempt it. Most of these people use crazy glue for the graft.
Sounds like you are wanting to play with your plants. I have to wait till next Spring since my season is so short. I have older root stock. I have young 9 month or so trees for scion use. Now It is just getting them all to get comfortable and established in their new homes. Being patient has never been my thing. I just want the shapes I see in my head to show in my tree. I will wait.

I can't wait for mine to mature and start shaping them. I would like to form some into bonsai.

I got impatient and bought older plants to use as root stock and then I will graft them to get the flowers I want and the gnarly caudex's. The ones I just got are over 3yrs old and gnarly and still underground. I lucked out someone had plants he was just growing. I had asked about root stock and he replied. I 6 plants for the price of one. Problem is I have to wait till next spring to start. To late in the season for me. Oh well
