I get both of them every year. I also get some Tiger Swallowtails in the spring when the lilacs are blooming but when those are done so are they.

Another dump post and run, not much time to comment, working alternating shifts and I'm tired! Gorgeous and interesting shots everyone.

Kurt, you're swimming in those caterpillars now. Thumbs up

Should be peak monarch migration here this week, so it's nice to assume my releases are on their way to MX. I might need to collect just a few more big caterpillars , to use all my tags. Or hurry up and make a net and try to get a few wild ones.
Plant it and they will come.

Butterflies
Had an exciting morning this Wed. My daughter who lives in Vermont called me early to say that a friend of hers in Maryland had posted on Facebook that on Tues morning while driving across the Bay Bridge he had seen a large 'cloud' of Monarch Butterflies flying along parallel to the bridge! Hundreds he guessed.

Off I went to try and find a possible overnight roost, reasoning that they would stop and nectar after crossing a large body of open water like it is reported they do in the Great Lakes. Went to a 280+ area on the Bay in sight of the Bridge with oodles of milkweed, goldenrod just coming in to flower and mature cedar trees.

When I got there and parked, I asked some early am runners if they had seen any Monarchs and got answers like 'Quite a few' and "yes, but they were all up in the trees' By the time I got there, I saw none in the trees but did see 15 - 20 'intensely nectaring' on some Butterfly Weed which was reblooming after being mowed in July. Bright orange beacons!

Guess my elderly now passed newspaper customer wasn't just pulling my leg when he told me that as kids he and his family would go down to their beach and watch clouds of Monarchs fly in each Fall. One year there were so many that ole man so and sos cedar tree turned orange!

Kurt, last pic is for you.

I just went out to refill the water in the fountain and started watering some plants when I noticed a new orange butterfly flapping around the yard finally it landed on the butterfly bush.
I rushed over with my cell phone and took more then enough to confirm my suspicion , before going back inside to get a better camera. Hurray! Hurray! My first ever Great Spangled Fritillary Hurray! Hurray!

I love seeing those Great Spangled Fritillaries when I visit WV. They're so large and shiny!

I need to upload some pictures! I've been playing with the new toys I ordered - mostly my Western Digital My Passport Wireless Pro. It's a wireless external hard drive. It also has an SD card reader so I'm going to test transferring my pictures to it. I plan to use it in Europe since you know I'm going to go picture crazy, but I won't be taking my laptop. I've also tested using the app on my phone to transfer pictures to the "cloud". Hilarious!

The culprit allowed to be measured (just in case I'll mention that it's cm not inches) and was sitting on the windowsill. Inside. Which makes me ask the question - why are there suddenly so many of them indoors? Are they already seeking shelter for the winter? The forecast says the min. temperature for the next week is ~42F here, so it shouldn't be too cold for them yet.

I hope it's not some sort of omen signalling an early onset of winter Glare

And here's another one on the wall:

I enjoyed reading about them. I am surprised more was not made of their rattling or hissing sound.
