We have some of them all too, Alice. Mosquitoes don't seem to like me and I seldom ever get a bite but chiggers, aka red bugs, feast on me. We don't have the no see ums, but sure had that problem when I lived on the Gulf Coast.

By the way, what is the time frame from when the mosquito lays her eggs, then to larva, and then to an adult (flying/biting) mosquito?

I believe the eggs can lay fallow until there is moisture then the process accelerates rapidly, 2 to 3 days but it likely is different for the various species. We have at least 3 different ones here. I am just going by what the health dept. tells us. We are constantly reminded about standing water and yes, those darn larvae are easily seen after a day or two.

Recent mosquito commercials say that we have over 50 species here. Most are harmless but still a nuisance. Other sites that I have read, do recommend flushing the urns to eliminate the larvae.
Currently don't own any bromeliads, but I do have many potted plants that like to be kept in a saucer full of water. I live next to a marshy area, The Carlos Avery Game Preserve and feel fortunate to have many young toads each year. They are great for dispatching insects and slugs.

I suspect you have more than a few freezes out there which take care of many. A saucer full of water around here would be frowned upon, it might even be against the law in places like So. Florida now.

The City of Miami Beach is issuing fines for having standing water around your house. First offense is $1,000 fine - Second offense is $2,000!!

By the way, Miami-Dade County is using BTI (mosquito bits) for controlling mosquito larvae. That's what I use in my broms.

No fines here. There are plenty of shallow water sources in the marsh. One year a female whooping crane was spotted here. It was kept secret. They were hoping she would bring a mate and settle there. It is a very large marsh. It has been a very wet summer here. I had 2.5" of rain 9/5 and 3" 9/6. We are expecting more severe weather tonight courtesy of the hurricane in Baja California.

I don't believe the specific mosquitoes that carry the virus could live in your zone 4a, they are a more tropical variety. I know there are some whopper sized skeeters in the north, I swear one almost carried me off when I was visiting in Ontario, Canada once.

For me, the bottom line is Microcephaly is a horrible, horrible condition and those parents that are faced with this dreadful situation have a long and very hard row to hoe. Hopefully someone will come up with a safer way to eradicate the disease carrying insects.

I agree but my grandmother's best friend died from West Nile after visiting Minnesota so not all is safe for the folks up north. When she got back home my grandmother went to see her and she was washing meat in her bathroom sink and said she had to get the stains out. My grandmother rushed her to the ER knowing something wasn't right but she died 3 or 4 days later.

That's one of the reasons Zika scares me so much. It's not just media hype, mosquitoes are very dangerous and my wife is 7 months pregnant. I know it sounds bad but I haven't let her go out in the garden since we found out she was pregnant and I'll make her come in if she tries to do anything else outside. We are having our first little girl and I don't want anything to harm her or my wife. Overprotective maybe but I have my reasons. I've also heard that Zika can be sexually transmitted and with as much as I'm in the garden I don't risk doing anything. For all the men out there you know that's love Hilarious!

All this is very interesting. Of course mosquitoes pose disease threat, and more than just the Zika virus, they always have. Heck, I remember way back when my boys were little they were asking people not to take kids out trick or treating due to mosquitoes spreading Encephalitis, and how many of us give our precious animals heart-worm pills?

I do have to say I have had less mosquitoes this year than in the past, and I have more bromeliads than past years, it's my newest craze Smiling . However, that mosquito truck has been driving up and down the street more this year also. I honestly worry more about the pesticides being sprayed into the air then the pesky mosquitoes flying around. I think it is a far stretch to start closing down botanical gardens and ripping out bromeliads in gardens. In that case rip off gutters around the house, drain swimming pools, creeks, and retention ponds too.

Simply walking around the home and emptying water holding sources is the best prevention, especially if it has been a week without rain, since a good heavy rain is a natural source of flushing out old water. I have found mosquito larvae in the BBQ grill cover once, so just a wee bit can give them the breeding ground they need. I've used BTI but I didn't really notice a difference, seems just cleaning out water harboring sources works the best for me. You'd be surprised when cleaning all those leaves out of the gutters how many skeeters start flying around.

I appreciate the heads up on this issue, I like the coffee ground idea too. By the way I'm an outdoors person and we camp a lot and that is where I encounter the mosquitoes, not in my backyard. Just saying. Whistling

Just where did the Zika virus come from? It has never been mentioned until last year. And then worries about the Olympics.I will have to do some research and find out.
